Many Black nonprofit leaders in Baltimore felt a mixed sense of loss and promise three years ago. Though the racial-equity funding that had begun to flow to Black-led groups in 2020 was already starting to slow, in Maryland another big change was underway. The Open Society Institute Baltimore, a longtime supporter of these groups, was closing its doors. Upon its exit, it collaborated with other funders to dedicate $10 million to this cause. That was meant to just be the beginning.

For decades, the wealthy have moved to Jackson, Wyo. for the Teton views and the low taxes. That trend has only accelerated with the growth of remote work. The newcomers’ first philanthropic inclination tends to be supporting environmental charities and the arts, according to Billionaire Wilderness, a 2020 book about the area by a Yale sociologist. What they often overlook, at least initially, are the social-service nonprofits that help middle- and lower-income people.

Turning Challenges Into Programming Innovations

In 2024, the human-services organization Clover made plans to bring 17 charities together on its eight-acre campus in New Orleans so families could interact with lots of groups for important services, including medical care, legal advice, and community-college courses. The collaboration would have also offered enrichment activities like coding and puppetry for their kids, all in one place. But even with a  $425,000 grant from the Kellogg Foundation, the effort never got off the ground.
