To the sadness of many Sydney coeliacs, beloved gluten-free bakery Nutie shut up shop in April after a decade of doughnuts. In its 10 years, iterations of Nutie brought flourless treats to Surry Hills, Balmain and finally Dulwich Hill, where it had been located since 2023. Now, Nutie founder Sina Klug has moved in her vegan bakery Miss Sina in its place. “Unfortunately, gluten-free products in this economy, for us, were just not viable anymore,” Klug says about the decision to close Nutie.

There’s a new neighbourhood cafe overlooking the Georges River in Sydney’s south – and it’s here to add something new to the area. Meet Bakers Dozen, a new spot for pastries, brekkie and more. “We wanted to give people an experience,” says owner Alyssa Sarigiannis, of the spot just back from the Sans Souci waterfront. “You walk into the space, and you can see the pastry chefs making everything.” Leading that kitchen is Clement Bazin.

Parramatta Road has long been known for its empty shopfronts and an array of stores that would be best described as “miscellaneous” – see, I Love You Bead Shop and Flags Fantastic. But in 2024, one little stretch in Stanmore became a bit of a dining destination when Pantry Story opened. The bakery’s serene vibe and outstanding, creative baked goods brought lines down the block. Now the team’s gone for round two, opening Sangcuary just next door.
