Are Major Medical Organizations Politically Partisan?
We are happy to publish this guest post regarding the political leanings of policy statements from US medical associations. While working with our colleague Vinay Prasad at UCSF, Dr Knudsen and colleagues came up with a novel way to adjudicate the political leanings of policy statements from professional medical associations. Below is a summary of their paper. It’s open access so feel free to click the link and appraise their methods.

Analysis of tweets discussing the risk of Mpox among children and young people in school (May-October 2022): a retrospective observational study
Discussion We found healthcare professionals and other credentialed Twitter profiles tended to provide inaccurate information, which exaggerated the risks of Mpox in school settings. Tweets exaggerating risks exceeded accurate ones by a ratio of 4.6:1. The category ‘PhDs, MPHs and Ed. degree’ had the highest tendency to overstate risks at 23 inaccurate tweets for every one accurate tweet.
Public health experts went on Twitter between May to October 2022 and promoted blatant misinformation about MonkeyPox
Thanks very much for the recognition about my tweets. I was so enraged that these people were leveraging their doctorates to such ill effect. These doctors clearly didn't know what they were talking about, clearly didn't do the homework by reading up on the epidemiology, and clearly had a problem with expressing any concern for the very real suffering that gay men were enduring last summer.
Public health experts went on Twitter between May to October 2022 and promoted blatant misinformation about MonkeyPox
In the summer of 2022, fears of monkeypox ran rampant. A number of public health experts turned to Twitter to provide commentary. We went through those tweets and judged them based on accuracy. The results are a damning indictment of public health. Here are the highlights, but check out the full paper here if you haven’t already. In case you’ve forgotten, think back to the summer and fall of 2022.

Death and Isolation During a Pandemic
Sir William Osler said, “The good physician treats the disease, but the great physician treats the patient that has disease.” I think a lot about Covid now that we are in the debriefing stage. This observation by Sir William Osler sums up why we failed in this instance. We treated the disease instead of the patients. And this is why so many of our policies seemed inhumane at the time, and even more inhumane in retrospect.
Death and Isolation During a Pandemic
My grandfather, one of the most noble, creative, and loving men I have met, recently passed away. His final days and weeks were filled with numerous visits from family and longtime friends. He had a final chance to see, touch, feel, and hug the special people who share countless of his everlasting memories. His wife and children never left his side, providing him love, support, and blessings though his final moments.
