Sundeep Ghuman never stood a chance. He was locked in a cell overnight with a White man who had been overheard telling other prisoners at YOI Feltham that he was part of a racist gang which went on attacks in south London. The man had volunteered the same information to officers on arrival at two more prisons, Peterborough and Belmarsh. The third man in the cell was the White man’s cousin.

Bamboozling way to build bikes

Innovative workshop course provides ray of light at troubled jail Pandas eat it. Schoolchildren used to be caned with it. But now prisoners at Lowdham Grange have found a surprising new use for bamboo – making bicycles out of it. In a workshop at the Cat-B men’s prison, six prisoners at a time learn how to construct the bikes. When they complete the six-week course, another group take their place; there is a waiting list for the popular activity.
