My feature-rich and minimal Linux terminal
Everyone likes to set up their workspaces in a specific way; it helps your productivity and makes life easier to have things organized in a way that feels organic and to have an environment that feels good to you. That definitely applies to terminals too; that's probably why there are so many terminal options available. When starting on a new computer, the very first thing I do is set up my terminal to make it my own.
Update: Personal guarantees in Alberta during the pandemic | JD Supra
In our April 17, 2020 previous publication, we explained the challenges involved in complying with the Guarantees Acknowledgement Act (Alberta) (the “GAA”) during the COVID-19 pandemic, because of the requirement that a personal guarantor appear in person before a lawyer. Fortunately the Alberta Government has now relaxed the traditional procedural requirements under the GAA in order to facilitate execution of personal guarantees, while social distancing measures remain in effect.
How to create a personal file server with SSH on Linux
The Raspberry Pi makes for a useful and inexpensive home server for lots of things. I most often use the Raspberry Pi as a print server to share a laser printer with other devices in our home or as a personal file server to store copies of projects and other data. I use this file server in various ways. Let's say I'm working on a project, such as a new book, and I want to make a snapshot copy of my work and all my associated files.
How to connect a Raspberry Pi to a serial USB port with Python from the terminal
Raspberry Pi can be used to interface with the real world from its GPIO, for example, by controlling a stepper motor. You can also use Raspberry Pi to dialog with some devices—like Arduino—by using a serial USB port. In this guide, I'll show you how to connect your Raspberry Pi to a serial USB port and read its values with Python from the terminal (without a desktop environment). For this purpose, we'll use Pyserial and its terminal tool.
A stress-free guide to keeping WordPress sites updated
We all know how important it is to keep WordPress sites updated. New updates provide the latest bug and security fixes against any nasties lurking on the web. But, more critically, an outdated site can also lead to poor performance, such as slow loading speed or an outdated look and feel. Unfortunately, keeping your WordPress site up-to-date is not as easy as clicking a button. There are several components to consider, from theme to plugins to PHP.

Why I use WordPress for education
I believe that WordPress has a place in every PK-12 school. Most teachers are looking for ways to quickly engage parents with news from the classroom, and while many use social media, WordPress provides a powerful alternative. A simple classroom blog that's easily accessible to all is a great way to improve communication. When I first came across WordPress in early 2006, I started using it as my own blogging software. I thought immediately of how useful this would be in a classroom.
Adding a display to a travel-ready Raspberry Pi Zero
In my earlier article, I explained how I transformed a Raspberry Pi Zero into a minimal, portable, go-anywhere computer system that, although small, can actually achieve useful things. I've since made iterations that have proved interesting and made the little Pi even more useful. Read on to learn what I've done. After the road trip My initial Pi Zero setup proved its worth on a road trip to Whitby, but afterward, it was largely consigned to the "pending" shelf, waiting for another assignment.
Create a real-time object tracking camera with TensorFlow and Raspberry Pi
Are you just getting started with machine/deep learning, TensorFlow, or Raspberry Pi? I created rpi-deep-pantilt as an interactive demo of object detection in the wild, and in this article, I'll show you how to reproduce the video below, which depicts a camera panning and tilting to track my movement across a room. I'm just a girl, standing in front of a tiny computer, reminding you most computing problems can be solved by sheer force of will.
3 handy command-line internet speed tests
Being able to validate your network connection speed puts you in control of your computer. Three open source tools that enable you to check your internet and network speeds at the command line are Speedtest, Fast, and iPerf. Speedtest Speedtest is an old favorite. It's implemented in Python, packaged in Apt, and also available with pip. You can use it as a command-line tool or within a Python script.
How piwheels will save Raspberry Pi users time in 2020
Piwheels automates building Python wheels (pre-compiled Python packages) for all of the projects on PyPI, the Python Package Index, using Raspberry Pi hardware to ensure compatibility. This means that when a Raspberry Pi user wants to install a Python library using pip, they get a ready-made compiled version that's guaranteed to work on the Raspberry Pi. This makes it much easier for Raspberry Pi users to dive in and get started with their projects.

What's new in GPIO Zero v1.5?
It’s become customary for me to summarise what each new GPIO Zero release brings. This one’s been a long time coming. It’s been a quite while since our last release (a whole year since the last point release and 18 months since v1.4). I mostly attribute the lack of development to the launch of my other project, piwheels. I think that was time well spent, but I’m sorry to say that GPIO Zero hasn’t come along as far as I’d hoped by now.
Celebrate our seventh birthday at a Raspberry Jam near you!
Seven years ago, the Raspberry Pi was launched, and that kickstarted everything the Foundation has done.

GPIO Zero: a friendly Python API for physical computing
Physical computing is one of the most engaging classroom activities, and it’s at the heart of most projects we see in the community. From flashing lights to IoT smart homes, the Pi’s GPIO pins make programming objects in the real world accessible to everybody. Some three years ago, Ben Croston created a Python library called RPi.GPIO, which he used as part of his beer brewing process.
Big Birthday Weekend 2018: find a Jam near you! - Raspberry Pi
We’re just over three weeks away from the Raspberry Jam Big Birthday Weekend 2018, our community celebration of Raspberry Pi’s sixth birthday. Instead of an event in Cambridge, as we’ve held in the past, we’re coordinating Raspberry Jam events to take place around the world on 3–4 March, so that as many people as possible can join in. Well over 100 Jams have been confirmed so far.
Raspberry Pi Zero GPIO expander
The recent announcement of the latest release of the Raspberry Pi Desktop x86 image alongside Raspbian Stretch for Raspberry Pi included mention of a GPIO expander tool, which was followed up by another blog post explaining how it works and how to use it. Since it uses pigpio to control the GPIO pins, that means you can use my GPIO Zero Python library to use it. And as of yesterday, you can easily set this up on an Ubuntu PC, not just Raspberry Pi Desktop. What is it?
5 ways to use Raspberry Pi in the classroom
I recently finished reading Your Starter Guide to Maker Spaces by Nick Provenzano, a Raspberry Pi Certified Educator. In the book, Nick describes a Raspberry Pi competition at the school where he teaches. Each student received a Raspberry Pi kit and was told to identify a problem, come up with a solution using the Pi, and not spend more than $75 on their project. The students' solutions varied, but the common result was that the students taught themselves to code.
5 Raspberry Pi projects you might want to build in your home
The Raspberry Pi computer can be used in all kinds of settings and for a variety of purposes. It obviously has a place in education for helping students with learning programming and maker skills in the classroom and the hackspace, and it has plenty of industrial applications in the workplace and in factories. I'm going to introduce five projects you might want to build in your own home.
The intersection of open source software and open educational resources in 2016
It was an exciting year covering the ways open source software and open educational resources provide an interesting intersection of the maker movement, with the emphasis on coding and creating using open resources and tools. We have even seen activities at the highest level of government in regards to the use of open educational resources. Professor William Stein at the University of Washington told us about his creation of SageMath.
What is the Raspberry Pi Foundation? 10 million computers sold
With more than 10 million units sold, the Raspberry Pi is a massive success. At this year's All Things Open, community manager Ben Nuttall gave a five-minute lightning talk introducing the educational charity behind the popular mini computer. The Raspberry Pi Foundation was created in 2006 with the goal of getting more students to study computer science at Cambridge University.
Top 10 Raspberry Pi add-on boards | Opensource.com
Did you know you can adorn your Raspberry Pi with HATs? Of course we're not talking about hats like people put on their heads, but rather HATs: "hardware attached on top". These are add-on circuit boards and accessories that add functionality to your Raspberry Pi. You can, of course, use the Pi on its own, using programming environments like Scratch and Python to program it. You can connect individual components to the Pi's general-purpose input/output (GPIO) pins and program them directly.
Getting started with Raspberry Pi photos and video
The Raspberry Pi camera module is a great accessory for the Pi—it's great quality, and can capture still photos and record video in full HD (1080p). The original 5-megapixel camera module was released in 2013, and a new 8-megapixel version was released in April this year. Both versions are compatible with all Raspberry Pi models. There are also two variations—a regular visible light camera, and an infra-red camera—both available for US$ 25.
Prepare your Raspberry Pi for space with an Astro Pi flight case
One year ago this month, I published my first article on Opensource.com. I talked about our Astro Pi program in Students compete for a chance to have their Raspberry Pi code run in space. We've come a long way in that last 12 months—in December, our two Astro Pi units were sent to the International Space Station aboard the Cygnus spacecraft on a resupply mission; closely followed by British ESA astronaut Tim Peake.
European Maker Week
A large part of the Raspberry Pi community identify as makers. We all love to make things – from robots to yarn to pottery to art – and share our creations with others. European Maker Week is a celebration of this rapidly growing community, and it takes place between 30 May and 5 June in 28 countries. EMW is an initiative promoted by European Commission and implemented by Maker Faire Rome in collaboration with Startup Europe.
Picademy: Free professional development for teachers from the Raspberry Pi Foundation
From the beginning, Raspberry Pi has been all about education. The idea that a piece of hardware everyone could afford in the hands of students used to learn programming skills and to build things was at the heart of the Foundation's mission to fix a problem in the education system in the UK. Soon it became apparent that the hardware was only part of the solution, and hands-on training for teachers would be needed, too.
Raspberry Pi 3 almost 10x as fast as the original Pi
The original Raspberry Pi went on sale four years ago, and more than 8,000,000 units have shipped since then. Raspberry Pi computers are used in schools and universities, in factories and other industrial applications, in home automation and hobby projects, and much more. Today the Raspberry Pi 3 was announced, featuring a 64-bit quad-core ARMv8 CPU clocked at 1.2GHz, making it roughly 10x the speed of the original Pi 1.

Top 5 Raspberry Pi projects for the classroom
Minecraft is the favorite game of pretty much every teenager in the world—and it's one of the most creative games ever to capture the attention of young people. The version that comes with every Raspberry Pi is not only a creative thinking building game, but comes with a programming interface allowing for additional interaction with the Minecraft world through Python code. Minecraft: Pi Edition is a great way for teachers to engage students with problem solving and writing code to perform tasks.
Latest issue of official Raspberry Pi magazine comes with the new Raspberry Pi computer
Starting today, shops and newsagents are stocking a computer magazine called The MagPi, and as a world's first, this magazine comes with a free computer—literally stuck to the front cover. It's the newest Raspberry Pi release, called Pi Zero. This computer also goes on sale around the world for just $5.
6 rules of sticker club, and the missing (unofficial) sticker manual
While I was looking at the collection of stickers on the All Things Open 2015 sticker table, I complimented event organizer Todd Lewis, who was standing nearby, on the conference stickers. Todd said he wasn't sure that he'd ordered the right shape. The All Things Open stickers are 5 inches wide by 2 inches tall. He said that somebody told him that he should have stacked the text and made the stickers smaller. "I don't know," he said, as we looked over the table of stickers.
A look at the Raspberry Pi Sense HAT
In my first article in my series, I wrote about the Astro Pi competition, an opportunity for UK school students to have their coded experiments run in space. We're getting closer and closer to the launch date of December 15, when British European Space Agency (ESA) Astronaut Tim Peake will embark on his six-month mission, Principia. He'll be conducting scientific experiments and engaging with young people in educational outreach activities.
Raspberry Pi project for high altitude ballooning
Lots of people embed a Raspberry Pi into their projects—whether it's an arcade machine, a robot, a photo booth, or a weather station. You can develop your application with the Pi like it's a desktop, then disconnect your mouse, keyboard, and monitor and embed it into your project, short-term or long-term. Another useful property of the Raspberry Pi is its weight–the Model B weighs 45 grams, and the Model A+ just 23 grams.
Raspberry Jams bring Pi enthusiasts together
When the first Raspberry Pi came out in 2012, it was no surprise when people in the tech community started to organize events focused around using the device. Software developers, hardware engineers, makers, teachers, children, and parents alike started to come together to learn about the Pi and what they could do with it. These events became known as Raspberry Jams, and they've inspired makers and educators around the world.
Raspberry Pi and Python in education
We love Python at the Raspberry Pi Foundation—it's our go-to general purpose programming language for most projects and activities. Our home-brewed, Pi-optimized Linux distribution Raspbian (a Debian variant) ships with a number of different languages and educational tools (Scratch, Ruby, Java, C, Wolfram, Mathematica, and, of course, the numerous others available in Linux), but the one we and many others tend to choose is Python. Python's syntax is not dissimilar to pseudocode.
Practical advice for teaching kids how to program
Programming is a creative activity that any kid can engage in. Your child might not care about writing data processing algorithms, but they might enjoy creating games, programming music, designing websites, or just playing around with code. I've written several books to teach beginners of all ages how to code, and I know from experience that you don't need to consider yourself a techie or "good at math" to learn.
How the Raspberry Pi Foundation developed its open education resources
When I started working at the Raspberry Pi Foundation, we set out to revamp the website and add learning materials for educators. In the mean time, we wanted to get a few resources out in time for Hour of Code week, so we wrote them on GitHub for easy sharing. It's easy to get started writing with markdown, and it made collaboration straightforward. Despite all being new to GitHub, the education team really liked the way this worked and wanted to stick with the method, so we did.
Star Wars Episode 3.14: A New Hope
Martin O’Hanlon is a co-author of Adventures in Minecraft which we featured back in November. The book’s full of incredible projects you can do with Minecraft, involving learning programming skills through building structures and interactive applications within the Minecraft world using the Python API provided in Minecraft: Pi Edition.
