Durban attempts revival with waterfront scheme

Few would argue that recent years have been kind to Durban, the largest city in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province. It was Durban and its environs that bore the brunt of riots sparked by the imprisonment of disgraced former president Jacob Zuma in July 2021. Several hundred people were killed as parts of the city and suburbs descended into anarchy. Economic damage reached as high as 70bn rand ($4.3bn). This was followed in 2022 by devastating floods that killed over 400 people.

Mombasa ocean meeting secures African gains

Mombasa became the centre of the ocean world last week, as the Kenyan city hosted the eleventh Our Ocean Conference. This marked the first time the meeting, which attracted over 5,000 delegates, was held on African soil. The conference resulted in a total of 320 investment pledges adding up $6.2bn, many of which focused on African priorities such as cracking down on illegal fishing and strengthening coastal ecosystems that absorb carbon.

Local start-up Ampere Vision Rwanda is seeking to pioneer agricultural drone services; its quadcopter hovers over the 130 hectares farmed by the Koubite cooperative, gently spraying fertilisers and pesticides onto the crops below. The efficiency of drones is a game changer in an industry where time is money. “With the drone you can do 21 hectares in just one day,” says Muyombano Happy Axel, the company’s founder.
