Abstract Mesoscale eddies significantly alter open ocean environments such as those found in the subtropical gyres that cover a large fraction of the global ocean. Previous studies have explored eddy effects on biogeochemistry and microbial community composition but not on the molecular composition of particulate organic matter.

Abstract Cross-platform observing systems are requisite to capturing the temporal and spatial dynamics of particles in the ocean. We present simultaneous observations of bulk optical properties, including the particulate beam attenuation (${\textit{c}_{\textit{p}}}$) and backscattering (${b_{\text{bp}}}$) coefficients, and particle size distributions collected in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre.
