North Korea moves into 2026 with a greater sense of security than at any point since the end of the Cold War. The state’s campaign to more tightly control and administer the economy is now entering its sixth year, with some seeing the market economy as dwindling and bucking under state pressure. Evaluating information from inside North Korea is more difficult today than ever since Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un came to power, largely due to the regime’s tightened information blockade since COVID-19.

Att tänka tillbaka på omvärldens förhoppningar på Nordkoreas Kim Jong-Un när han först kom till makten sent 2011 får gärna något rosaskimrade över sig. Han var då 27 eller 28 år gammal och efterträdde sin far Kim Jong-Il. Det man då visste om honom var att han hade studerat i Västeuropa och hade en förkärlek för västerländsk popmusik – bland annat Eric Clapton. Med sådana erfarenheter verkade det nästan självklart att han skulle öppna upp och reformera det slutna och hårt kontrollerade landet.
