eLife Assessment This important study uses extensive comparative analysis to examine the relationship between plasma glucose levels, albumin glycation levels, and diet and life history, within the framework of the ‘pace of life syndrome’ hypothesis. The evidence that glucose is positively correlated with glycation levels and lifespan is convincing and, although there are some limitations related to data collection, they likely make the statistically significant findings more conservative.

Abstract The pace of life hypothesis (POL) suggests that organisms&#8217 life history, physiological and behavioural traits should co-evolve. In this context, glycaemia (i.e., blood glucose levels) and its consequences to ageing through its reaction with proteins and other compounds (i.e. glycation) constitute physiological traits which remain under-investigated in an evolutionary comparative framework, notably in relation to life history traits and ecological factors.

Abstract Enteroviruses are human pathogens known to challenge water safety (1,2). Among the microbial stressors found in water, bacterial serine proteases contribute to the control of enterovirus persistence (3). However, the structural interactions accounting for the susceptibility of enteroviruses to proteases remains unexplained. Here, we describe the molecular mechanisms involved in the recruitment of serine proteases to viral capsids.
