Abstract Accessing the rich information carried by infrared light typically relies on bulky, complex optoelectronic systems. Lanthanide-based upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) offer a compelling alternative by converting infrared light into visible photons through nonlinear anti-Stokes processes. However, achieving strong upconversion under the low excitation intensities relevant to infrared vision remains challenging, motivating strategies to enhance light–matter interaction.

1 Introduction Bandpass filters (BPFs) are useful tools for chemical sensing. In the non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) sensing paradigm, a broadband light source is filtered by a BPF with a passband matched to an absorption line of the gas nominated for detection. The filtered light passes through an analysis volume, and onto a photodetector, producing a signal.
