Navy ship designs often promote rust, from using non-stainless steel fasteners on the ship’s exterior to routing drainage water down the side of the hull. The service also places most of the burden of painting on sailors, who are often poorly trained for the task and in short supply—they were recruited for technical skills, not to apply paint to steel. And many of us older folks seem to recall our ships as sleek and gray, without a spot of rust. But that was not reality.
