We investigated the biomass of parental and hybrid tobacco leaves at different growth stages (Fig. 1A) and found significant differences in biomass among different varieties (Supplementary file 1, Table 2; Fig. 1B). After 45–52 days of transplantation, the hybrid advantage of biomass reached 14.99% points, decreased by 12.90% points from 52 to 59 days after transplantation, and increased by 5.68% points from 59 to 66 days.

Plant materials: planting, treating and sampling In this experiment, seven tobacco varieties, including K326, Hongda, HG, GDH11, Va116, VG, and GDH88, were selected to determine the function of NtGSTs. The K326 was used for different stress treatments, and the remaining six varieties were used to analyze the expression pattern of NtGSTs in different tissues and stages.
