Background The use of ionising radiation in medical imaging has raised concerns about its potential harmful effects on patients and staff. To minimise the risks from ionising radiation, all involved staff need to understand radiation exposure and employ techniques for dose reduction and protection. The principles of radiation protection, justification, optimization and dose limitation should guide all medical examinations using ionising radiation.
