Will ChatGPT or Twitter Become the End Human Intelligence?
Benjamin Franklin stated, "If you would not be forgotten as soon as you are dead and rotten, either write things worth reading, or do things worth the writing." MIT's well-known late Director of Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Patrick Winston, expanded upon this adage, saying, "Your success in life will be determined largely by your ability to speak, your ability to write, and the quality of your ideas.
2022 Predictions: NFTs Move Beyond Laundering & CircleJerks While Fake Meat Gets Attacked by the Sea
Happy New Year! As Omicron spreads across the world, housing shortages extend across many nations, and inflation staying like a bad Vegas hangover, but we are not in a brave new world yet. 2022 looks to be a steady reset of our economy and bringing rationality to markets across the world and financial systems. Now to my predictions for 2022… NFTs Move Beyond Money Laundering, Crypto CircleJerks into Mainstream NFTs were all the rage in niche circles and the tech media.
2021 tech will be about cloud and the workplace shift
Happy New Year! 2020 is finally over, and it’s time to make some big predictions for 2021 — and to look back on how well I fared with my 2020 predictions. It turns out, I was surprisingly on point with my 2020 predictions. And COVID seems to have played a substantial role there. Here is my report card for those: Cloud kitchens I predicted that cloud kitchens would become a multibillion dollar industry. While this trend was well on its way at the start of 2020, it wa somewhat helped by the pandemic.

Local Journalism Initiative Sask., Alta energy ministers take federal parliamentary secretary to task on pipelines, CCS Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Sudbury – Saskatchewan and Alberta’s respective energy ministers took federal Parliamentary Secretary for Natural Resources Paul Lefebvre to task on some of policies implemented by the federal government, and particularly the lack of an oil pipeline to the East Coast.
Cryptocurrencies regulation
By #MetaHash on The Capital The legal mode of cryptocurrencies differ. Some countries have already officially authorized transactions with blockchain assets, which are regarded as a commodity or digital investment asset. In other states, the regulation of blockchain transactions is limited to mandatory financial reporting. In other places, crypto circulation is not controlled in any way or is prohibited at all. But the trend is clear.

2020: Our meatless, cashless, city-less future
Happy New Year! 2019 has come and gone like Kylo Ren’s reign in The Rise of Skywalker, and so it’s time for my (13th!) annual prediction piece for VentureBeat. But first, a quick look at the scorecard for my 2019 predictions: Facial recognition trials will launch in large public venues outside of China. 2019 saw numerous trials, including at carnivals in Nice, France, airports in Las Vegas, and public housing in Detroit.
Top Ten Startup Ecosystems in the World 2019: Flat Earth Ahead
We skipped last year, but this year SparkLabs Group is back with our fourth rankings and report of the Top Ten Startup Ecosystems in the World. These past few years we have seen the rest of the world catch up a bit to Silicon Valley, but it is still the clear leader in startup growth and innovation. Almost every city increased its assessment numbers, apart from London, which was affected by Brexit. Even so, London barely maintained the tenth spot, with Berlin hot on its tail.

2019: The year face recognition goes big and voice ads stall
Happy New Year! Unlike the holiday fruitcake we’ve all been avoiding the past couple of weeks, 2018 was far from stale. The year was riddled with controversies, excitement, and disappointments — from Facebook selling it’s soul … err, our souls, to the battle over net neutrality to Apple hitting over a trillion dollars to cryptocurrencies’ nosedive.
Why South Korea is 'crypto crazy' and what that means for the rest of the world
South Korea is truly crypto crazy. While the country has less than 1 percent of the world’s population, estimates indicate it is responsible for 30 percent of all cryptocurrency trading in the world. Steve Lim, CSO of South Korean crypto exchange Coinone said in an interview last year: “People are crazed over it. Grandpas and grandmas come to our office lobby and say they want to put [in] half a billion won ($447,000).
5 predictions for 2018: Blockchain bounty hunters and more
I’ve been posting annual predictions on VentureBeat every year for the past 10 years, and I’m embarassed to say that I missed the mark badly on a couple of my predictions for last year. With the Internet of Things heating up and autonomous vehicles emerging, I thought we’d see intelligent highways in 2017. Wrong. And with so much movement in the FinTech sector, I was sure we’d see the launch of a global online-only bank last year. Wrong again.
The First $100 Billion Dollar Blockchain Company Could Be The Next SAP
There can be a lot of hype around how disruptive blockchain technology will be where some trumpet how it will change everything in our world today and every industry is primed for disruption. While I am excited about blockchain technology, I do not believe it’s a cure-all technology.
Don't Be Dumb Money: How To Invest In ICOs And Blockchain Startups
Early-stage startup investing hasn’t changed. Investment approach and what active angels and venture capitalists look for in startups haven’t changed, so why should it change for cryptocurrency investors? I probably sound like a retired John Wooden or Obi-Wan Kenobi to some young millennial crypto investors, but there is no reason these factors change if it’s only the funding mechanism and not the actual paths to building successful companies.
Top 10 startup ecosystems in the world 2017: China rising
When I ranked last year’s top 10 startup ecosystems, they didn’t show much movement from the year before. But this year’s analysis has shown tectonic shifts in the world’s innovation landscape. A new entrant has joined us this year, Shanghai, with Berlin dropping out of the top 10. Los Angeles has jumped from seventh to fourth in a tie with Stockholm, which dropped a spot. Beijing had the most dramatic increase, from eighth to a second-place tie with Tel Aviv.

2017 will see intelligent highways, a global bank, and more
It’s hard to believe this is my 10th annual predictions piece for VentureBeat. VentureBeat founder Matt Marshall asked me write my first prediction piece in 2007 for the year 2008. The tech landscape has changed a lot since then. In 2008, Microsoft offered $44.6 billion for Yahoo, and now Verizon could acquire Yahoo for $4.8 billlion. Cloud computing made its mark in 2008, back when no one could have imagined Amazon would be leading the space.
Hey, Silicon Valley: This election shows we have to give back
Like many in Silicon Valley, I was surprised at the results of the election. But now that the shock has worn off, I’ve reminded of a key insight Abraham Maslow taught us: If a person’s basic physiological needs are not being met or are threatened, why would they care for issues on race relations or foreign policy? Americans are worried about jobs.
Tel Aviv Has 3rd Best startup ecosystem in the world
SparkLabs Global Ventures puts TLV ahead of NYC, LA, London, Berlin and Beijing on list of Top 10 startup ecosystems in the world 2016. Last year was the first time SparkLabs revealed its rankings for the top 10 startup ecosystems in the world here on VentureBeat. Now I’m excited to present our update for 2016. The top 10 haven’t changed, but there has been movement within the rankings. Los Angeles has jumped two spots up, replacing Seoul in the number five spot.

Startup Fundraising 101 revisited
Time flies when you are having fun and going through the roller coaster ride of startup life. It’s been seven years since I wrote my “Startup Fundraising 101” article here at VentureBeat, and I still get emails on it, so I thought it would be a good time to revisit and update this article. Since then I’ve suffered through another startup, launched an accelerator and invested in 56 companies, and launched a global seed fund and invested in 59 companies across 5 continents.

12 things we learned as a new VC fund
When we launched SparkLabs Global Ventures two years ago, we faced a lot of uncertainty and risk as a new seed-stage fund. How would the chemistry work out between the six partners? How would entrepreneurs respond to our vision and team? How would investors respond to our thesis as a global seed-stage fund? After two years, we’ve invested in 54 companies across five continents and backed many inspiring and awesome entrepreneurs.
2016 will be Silicon Valley's hangover year
2016 is going to be an unusual year for the tech community. In fact, it will be so different from 2015 that we’ll look back like Alan, Phil, and Stu from “The Hangover” and wonder what the heck happened. What looked hot and incredible in 2015 will look like smushed Gray’s Papaya or Hot Doug’s on the street from the night before in 2016. I believe most analysts expect a financial downturn, but we don’t know how severe it will be.

2015 will be 'Fear and Loathing' in Silicon Valley
It is challenging for my youthful soul to accept that this is the eighth annual edition of my technology predictions here at VentureBeat. I hope this doesn’t hit 30 editions and I’m writing from a self-driving, hovering rocking chair. Here are my predictions for 2015… 1. Outflow of security-related startups 2015 looks to be a year of paranoia, where 6-step authentication will come into vogue and 3-factor biometrics systems roll out.
Entrepreneurs, here's how to think about your valuation
Are you ready to bring more awareness to your brand? Consider becoming a sponsor for The AI Impact Tour. Learn more about the opportunities here. I’m writing this from my recent experiences both as a serial entrepreneur and as an investor at a seed-stage fund, which is typically a sub-$100 million fund. First, I agree with the emphasis on the importance of burn rate from Bill Gurley and Fred Wilson that generated some buzz a few weeks ago.
Thinking About Valuation as an Entrepreneur
A couple of discussions related to our portfolio companies last week led to me write this blog post. The timing could not have been better, since there have recently been some great posts related to this topic from Jamie McGurk and Stephen McDermid at Andreessen Horowitz, and from Fred Wilson at Union Square. I’m writing this from my recent experiences both as a serial entrepreneur and as an investor at a seed-stage fund, which is typically a sub-$100 million fund.
5 big changes we'll see this year, starting with new messaging from Facebook
Happy New Year! 2014 will be when the Internet and technology start becoming everyone’s sci-fi dream world – or nightmare. The “shocking news” of the NSA peeping into your world was only the tip of the iceberg. As Internet connectivity expands into our clothes, bodies, and homes, the potential for intrusion by someone becomes exponentially greater.
