Nocturnal paroxysmal dystonia to sleep‐related hypermotor epilepsy: A critical review

|

The notion of all SPMEs being of epileptic origin is based on weak neurophysiological evidence. The percentage of cases showing positive interictal/ictal EEG findings in reports of SPMEs is very low. A critical review of major studies published on this syndrome demonstrates “overreading” of EEG artifacts and normal variants as spikes. Lack of EEG findings in some cases of frontal lobe epilepsy cannot be used to justify that all SPME cases are epileptic in nature.
