Opinion: Ever before I met Pope Francis, he had touched my soul
It was a few days before Holy Week in 2013 when my journey with Pope Francis began. I wasn’t a priest yet. I was a seminarian studying in Oregon to become a priest. That seminary school had a gym where the first floor was a basketball court and the second floor had cardio machines. On this particular day I was on the second floor exercising with a few friends. Suddenly we heard the bells of the seminary church ringing calling everyone to meet at the gymnasium.
Unpacking electoral competition: campaign spending, vote distribution and turnout in Chilean mayoral elections
ABSTRACT We examine the complex relationship between campaign spending and electoral outcomes in local elections. We focus on (1) how spending influences the distribution of votes across candidates; (2) its impact on voter turnout; and (3) the differential effects of different types of campaign spending.
Delincuencia, municipalidades y recursos
God sends us forth
There is a popular story that I’ve seen on the internet, shared by email and posted on blogs and social media. It’s a story that speaks about practicing what one preaches. I am not sure whether it is factual or not, but it will help us to understand as we reflect on Sunday’s readings. The story says that a mother had a son who was addicted to candy. One day she encountered Gandhi, explained to him the situation and asked him for advice.
Created for Communion
A reflection on the readings for June 9, 2024 On September 19, 1985, at around 7 a.m., Mexico City and its surrounding area suffered one of the largest earthquakes in its history, registering 8.1 on the Richter scale. The consequences of the disaster were devastating and the following days were filled with chaos. The number of deaths and the scope of the material destruction were never known exactly. It is estimated that there were more than 3,000 deaths.
The Ascension is the beginning of our new adventure
A reflection on the readings for May 12, 2024 — The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord Today, we are celebrating the feast of the Ascension. With today’s feast we are nearing the conclusion of the Easter season in our liturgical calendar, on Pentecost. Today we contemplate Christ’s Ascension into heaven. We reflect on the new mission he proclaims to his followers: go out into the world and proclaim the Gospel.
The presence and continuity of God
A reflection on the readings of April 14, 2024 — the Third Sunday of Easter In our parish office we like to have a bowl of chocolates to offer to people who stop by. We are always amused at the fact that once St. Valentine’s Day is over, all the heart-shaped chocolates become ridiculously cheap. The same happens after Easter Sunday. Although Easter chocolates were pricey this year, on the Monday after Easter, all the bunny- and egg-shaped chocolates went on sale.
Dry branches and new fruit
A reflection on the readings for March 10, 2024 — The Fourth Sunday of Lent. Today we are celebrating the fourth Sunday of Lent, also known as “Laetare Sunday,” which means “rejoice.” However, here’s a fun fact: even though the colors of Lent look a lot like the colors of Advent, its message is completely different. It is true that in both seasons, the purple color is used in vestments and decorations, with a pink (or rather, “rose”) liturgical color in the middle of the calendar.
Lepers in Our Time
If we were to take a time machine and travel to any part of the world, at any time in history, we will see that for that particular period, that particular culture, there is always a minority group that is seen as the “cursed ones”, the “condemned ones”, the ones bringing perdition into the society. Certainly, we can think of a few examples of different minority groups that have experienced that treatment in our country.
Answering God's Call - Where Peter Is
A reflection on the readings for Sunday, January 14, 2024 — The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time We have all seen photos of ourselves when we were younger. Many of us who are younger have even had the opportunity to see videos of ourselves as children. Look at how we have all grown! These glimpses of old memories provide us with perfect opportunities to reflect on the directions our lives are taking. But right now — without photos — let’s briefly remember our childhoods.
Opinion: 'The Little Drummer Boy' shares lessons about marginalization and overcoming setbacks
Lara is pastor at Sacred Heart and St. Margaret Mary parishes in Brawley and St. Joseph parish in Westmorland. He lives in Brawley. One of the most popular Christmas carols we hear, both in English and Spanish, is “The Little Drummer Boy.” This song is very beautiful even when the lyrics are somewhat different in the two languages. Interestingly enough, both versions have the same outcome: At the end, a poor boy plays his drum in front of Jesus, Mary and Joseph in the manger.
Seeking God in the Desert
A Reflection on the readings of December 10, 2023 — The Second Sunday of Advent To better understand the message that the Church is giving us on this Second Sunday of Advent, we could think of a father who is praying, when he is suddenly interrupted by his son. His son had been playing hide-and-seek with a friend. And in this case his friend hid so well that the son couldn’t find him and got tired of looking for him.
Be Prepared
A reflection on the Readings for Sunday, November 12 — The Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Every time we are going to start something—a new project, a rehearsal, a new chapter—it always requires of us that we prepare properly to be able to perform effectively. A new day of school requires us to do assigned readings, homework, and all that. If a violinist is going to give a concert, he needs to have practiced the scores, tuned the strings, and put resin on his bow.
Cultivating good fruit
A reflection on the Readings for Sunday, October 8 — The Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time A couple days ago, I took some time to visit the classrooms of our parochial school. As you can imagine, there were jokes, laughter, games, and more with the kids. When visiting one of the classes, I heard a peculiar story that helps us begin to reflect on today’s readings: The story tells us that somewhere there lived a little turtle named Rafael.
Homework for the life of our community
Reflection on the readings for Sunday, September 10, the Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time. In the last few weeks, many families have reached the end of the summer break and have returned to school. I’ve talked to many people in my community, and I’ve seen their posts on Facebook and Instagram, and many of them have had the opportunity over the summer to go to the beach or Disneyland. Other parishioners were able to take a getaway to Petco Park to support the San Diego Padres.
Finding God along life's journey
A reflection on the readings for August 17, 2023, the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time On the first day of this year, January 1, 2023, the popular church hymn Amazing Grace turned 250 years old. I mention it today particularly because if we pay attention to the lyrics, we will find a bit of the message of today’s Gospel. Amazing Grace was written by John Newton, a former slave trader who experienced a religious conversion after almost dying in a shipwreck in 1748.
Opinion: Easter reminds us that Jesus' greatest power was his willingness to sacrifice for love
(Nelvin C. Cepeda/The San Diego Union-Tribune) While the world saw a man defeated, bleeding, abandoned, nailed to a piece of wood, God surprised people out of love, and emerged victorious. Lara is a priest for the Catholic Diocese of San Diego and lives in Brawley. Some of my all-time favorite movies are from the James Bond saga. While there are certainly some 007 films that I like more than others, I can usually watch any one of these movies over and over without getting bored.
Opinion: Día de Reyes teaches us that treasure can be found in the small places
Lara is a Catholic priest for the Diocese of San Diego. He lives in Brawley. Your Christmas tree may be on the curb and memories of holiday get-togethers are beginning to fade. But for believers, the Christmas season continues for two to three weeks after Dec. 25. In fact, Catholics and other Christian denominations will celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany on Jan. 6, the 12th day of Christmas.
