In my early 20s, I had an editor who, when writing on deadline, used to perform the exact same ritual: He’d stay home from the office, cook a pot of pasta (which doubled as his bowl), and refuse to leave his house until he finished the story. I used to imagine him at home, writing the way I do: hyperfocused, mumbling, sometimes pacing, annoyed at any and all distractions. And I guess I always knew that image was correct because I know what it’s like to experience creative flow.

Last summer, I booked an Amtrak ticket from New York City to North Carolina, a 13-hour trip that many, I’m sure, would say was wildly inconvenient. Flights back home are usually two hours tops. But I was in it for the experience and the decompression. I’d spent two-ish weeks traveling and staying with my closest friends up north. After busy days socializing and being surrounded by people (in the best way), a quiet, slow trip home sounded serene.

The Alternative to the 5-Year Plan

Last week, I took a morning off to hike with my nephew. At 15, he’s at that age when everyone is asking him what he hopes to be when he grows up—not in an exploratory Career Day way, but in a college-is-right-around-the-corner way. I hated this question when I was his age, but admittedly, I’m guilty of asking it myself. For me, and I’m sure for many others, it’s less about needing to know his entire life trajectory and more about being impatient to understand the person he’s becoming.
