Good Choices for Fall Reading
It’s been a long time since the sudden death of Willa’s husband Ben, who died at their beach house in Ocean City, Md., while doing some work there. Ben was only 36, so the news was shocking for both his wife, Willa, and son Jamie. Willa has decided that it’s best to put the place up for sale, and she knows she has to go down and face the house because it will need work. Her memories assail her at every turn, and she even sees Ben (or his spirit) on the beach, in the house and even on the boardwalk.
Book review: Grief, ghosts, love, laughs in beautifully written summer read
It takes a lot of finesse to make a light summer read emotional and heart-wrenching, yet still full of humor. Beth Harrison has achieved just that with “Every Time You Go Away.” It has some faint tones of the movie “Ghost” running through it, which is a plus for me. I don’t as a rule go for the paranormal, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one.Willa is still struggling to overcome her grief. Her husband, Ben, died unexpectedly of a heart attack while getting their beach cottage ready for the summer.

When Willa arrives, the house is in worse shape than she could have imagined, and the memories of her time with Ben are overwhelming.

Three years have passed, and Willa, a schoolteacher who lives with her 17-year-old son, Jamie, in suburban Maryland, hasn’t really moved on.
