The recent shutdown of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau leaves the American people right back where we were before the bureau opened its doors in 2010: vulnerable to the reckless and predatory lending practices that left millions in foreclosure, millions of others without work and the nation in great recession. The Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency ironically is dismantling one of the most efficient government agencies in existence.

Reporting medical debt penalizes people for getting sick

Over 100 million people across the nation, including New Jerseyans, struggle with medical debt every day. What makes medical debt different is that it is incurred involuntarily. Currently, any unpaid debt can be reported to credit-reporting agencies. No one’s credit should be ruined just because they get sick, and New Jersey policymakers can ensure this never happens by banning the reporting of all medical debt.

Although more than five million people have been vaccinated in New Jersey, we are not past the health or the economic crises. Housing insecurity continues to be one of the greatest threats to the health and wellbeing of New Jerseyans.
