1 Introduction The discovery in the late 1980s and 1990s that immune checkpoint proteins such as programmed death-1 (PD-1) and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4) enable tumors to manipulate the immune system led to subsequent clinical research into immune checkpoint inhibition as a therapeutic strategy for cancer [1]. Tumor cells can evade immune response through interactions with immune checkpoint proteins on T cells that lead to T-cell deactivation.
