What was your first job as a journalist?
My first job as a journalist was as a parenting columnist for 24 Hours newspaper.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes! I used to use one to do my homework when I was younger.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I'm interested in timely/new story angles and personal interest pieces. When pitching to me, please include the "why now?".
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I keep a spreadsheet of editor contacts and story pitches, use PayPal for invoicing, and have created a list of editors on Twitter.
What's your favorite social network?
Instagram - I love sharing photos from my travels and getting inspired by other travel photos as well.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I wrote an 8-page feature story on one of the rarest seabirds in the world for Birding Magazine (I'm not a birder at all!).
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Create a portfolio of your writing - even if you start by writing a blog.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Anytime!
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Exploring the outdoors with my three kids, or on a trip exploring a new destination for a story.
