Highly efficient circularly polarized phosphorescent electroluminescence from iridium(III) complexes with chiral ligands A pair of chiral iridium(III) complexes with ligand chiral center only were successfully synthesized. Strong intramolecular hydrogen bonds exist in these complexes, which improve their stability and luminescence efficiency.

In this paper a series of steric phenylpyridazine based homoleptic iridium(III) complexes (13) has been synthesized with novel one-pot methods. For example, synthesis of complex 1 was accomplished in 10% yield using the inexpensive IrCl3(tht)3 metal reagent in decalin. Afer trifluoromethyl groups were introduced into the ligands, complexes 2 and 3 can be synthesized in 58% and 55% high yields, respectively, by the direct reaction of IrCl3 and corresponding ligand.
