What was your first job as a journalist?
I was hired by TV Guide Canada to do paste-up and assembly. Had zero experience. Snuck into editorial meetings and wore them down.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes! The old IBM Selectra. They're boat anchors now.
What's your favorite social network?
Fox--they throw the best press tour parties.
Who do you wish followed you?
My children, Katie and Daniel. They are young adults now, one in university and the other graduated, and I've always valued their feedback.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I was co-editor of the Michael Power Post (or Com-post, as some called it), where I savaged teachers in editorial cartoons. Best gig ever.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Take out all the adverbs. Plus this tip passed down from Roger Ebert: the fastest way to finish a story is to start one.
