Did Canadian hockey fans stop watching the Stanley Cup playoffs with the elimination of the last remaining Canadian team at the end of the Third Round? That would be a resounding yes/oui. In Game 1 of the finals, played on Tuesday, June 2, the game between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Carolina Hurricanes drew an overnight, estimated audience of 723,000 on Sportsnet National and 582,000 on CBC Total. That adds up to a little over 1.3 million combined in English Canada.

First, here is what I liked best about the 2026-27 Bell Media Upfront that took place Thursday in Toronto at Meridian Place: that it still happens. These big, showy, ad agency programming-paloozas are quickly becoming a thing of the past. Some networks, including what’s left of CBS, have gotten out of the rent-a-hall business and simply put out a press release.

I’ve attended the annual Bell Media Upfront in Toronto since before my son Dan Brioux (the tall guy on the left) was born. Yesterday was the first time I was there more as a proud dad then as a reporter. Dan just earned a VP title as part of the development team at Bright North Studios.

What was your first job as a journalist?

I was hired by TV Guide Canada to do paste-up and assembly. Had zero experience. Snuck into editorial meetings and wore them down.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes! The old IBM Selectra. They're boat anchors now.

What's your favorite social network?

Fox--they throw the best press tour parties.
