Healing & Spreading Joy
The old man pedaled aimlessly on his stationary bike, forcing his way through a workout while watching a football game on the big television. His hip did not hurt much while he pedaled but he knew it would be agonizing the moment he got off and tried to walk. His hip replacement surgery was still somewhere out there in the invisible future and time seemed to crawl while he waited. He finished his forced half hour on the bike and slowly stopped pedaling.
Christmas is Magic: even for butterflies
“Do butterflies hug?” “Do you think butterflies are always Christmas Happy?” It was the Christmas season and Christmas is magic. Christmas drops flakes of magic around the world, each flake dropping silently, each carrying lights and music and laughter and love, each bringing smiles of joy to faces that seemingly long ago had forgotten what a smile was. But for every "Autumn Leaves" or "It Might As Well Be Spring" or "A Hazy Shade of Winter," there are dozens of songs about summer, many of them familiar classics that remain oldies radio staples. It's not hard to see why. A bunch of leaves signifying lost love, a couple of buds on the trees spelling evanescent hope—these can't compete against sunshine, time off, and flings. A good summer song takes you somewhere.
We've Always Known
There's an ultimatum you've got to accept early on when you're growing up queer in the South: Nobody gives a fuck about you. Many people, including some straight and cisgender folks, had that epiphany again Sunday morning, when we woke to the news that forty-nine members of the LGBTQ+ community were dead in Florida, murdered by a man with an assault rifle and, so far, little motive other than the fact they were gay.
