1 Introduction Sepsis is currently defined as a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection (Singer et al., 2016). It poses a critical threat to patients due to its high potential to progress to multiple-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and other lethal complications (Wheeler and Bernard, 1999).
