1 INTRODUCTION Dislocations in ceramics have been proven promising for tuning functional and mechanical properties.1-10 To engineer dislocations into ceramic materials, mechanical deformation has been an effective way and is increasing attention, particularly at room temperature.11 Dislocation-mediated plasticity has been proven feasible in bulk single-crystal oxides at either high temperature4, 7, 12 or room temperature,13-15 making single crystals an appealing candidate for investigating...

1 INTRODUCTION In contrast to metals and metallic alloys, which can undergo extensive plastic deformation, most ceramics are brittle and exhibit little or no plasticity at low-to-moderate temperatures.1-3 This brittleness inherently originates from the strong ionic and covalent bonds in ceramics.1, 4 The complex crystal structure and pronounced anisotropy in many ceramics further restrict their ability to accommodate plastic deformation.

Survey design At the end of the seminar, students completed a survey that included a set of questions assessing their interest level and knowledge before and post-seminar, and questions on knowledge gained, level of confidence in subject ability, the relevance of the seminar's topics/techniques to their (planned) research, and seminar elements (e.g., group project). The survey was covered under the University of Hawai'i IRB Protocol #2020-00940.
