1 Introduction Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are prevalent (more than 75%) over other infections in hospitalized patients.[1] Indwelling catheters facilitate the entrance of microbes into the bladder which leads to the development of hard-to-treat urinary infections, as well as catheter malfunctioning. For instance, extraluminal colonization by the rich periurethral flora occurs upon catheter insertion, or later by microbes ascending along the catheter-urethra interface.
