Protein-Based Engineered Living Materials: From Programmable Self-Assembly to Mechanical Reinforcement via Biomineralization

|
By Alexander James, Alexander Jamés, Birrell Diaz
| ACS Publications
In nature, cells have evolved the ability to synthesize structural biopolymers (e.g., proteins, carbohydrates) capable of self-assembling into higher-order biopolymeric scaffolds such as wood, skin, or bone. These natural biomaterials provide different functions to the cells and/or organisms that synthesize them, such as mechanical support, protection against the environment, nutrient acquisition, and surface adhesion.
