My friend Charlie – and the line between good and evil
A year ago, on the afternoon of September 10, 2025, I was 20 feet away when my friend Charlie Kirk was murdered, shot dead for holding a public debate on whatever topics the students of Utah Valley University wanted to talk about. I spent the rest of the day in the waiting room of Timpanogos Hospital, first hoping for a miracle and then coming to grips with the miracle that did not come. I had little to do except reply to the dozens of messages pouring in, asking how I was holding up.

America’s Youth Still Need Charlie Kirk
One year ago today, America lost Charlie Kirk. In some ways, it feels like only yesterday. At other times, it feels like a lifetime ago. Twelve months after that horrifying day, we have only begun to reckon with the scale of the loss for conservatism—and for America. To someone who ignores politics, it can be hard to explain just why Charlie’s loss was so great. He had a popular podcast—but there are many of those. He did campus debates—but he didn’t have a monopoly on that concept.

There’s a logic to Donald Trump’s incendiary diplomacy
On his very first day as Colombia’s new President, Abelardo de la Espriella received a dramatic house-warming gift: a billion dollars, courtesy of Donald Trump. Three days later, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the country – but correlation is not causation. The President’s ten-figure donative arrived as aid for the militarised crackdown de la Espriella has promised against Colombia’s fearsome drug cartels and jungle guerillas.
Will the Supreme Court allow a ‘creed’ to kill America?
Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch’s tour to tout his new children’s book about the Declaration of Independence should have been uneventful. But then Gorsuch decided to talk about what America is. On Fox News, with the New York Times and in the pages of the Wall Street Journal, Gorsuch kept staking out his view on what makes America special: America has no religion, no race, no people at all really, but instead a singular majestic idea. “We’re a creedal nation, right,” Gorsuch told the Times.
What is the supply side of Britain and Europe’s decline?
In his new book Why Populists Are Winning: and How to Beat Them, British MP Liam Byrne argues that it’s time to go after the “supply side” of populism – time, that is, to curb freedom of the press and the right of individuals to spend money on causes they believe in. For a decade, you see, the European and British establishments have focused on quashing the demand side of populism.

GUEST REVIEW: Alexander to Actium, by Peter Green
Alexander to Actium: The Historical Evolution of the Hellenistic Age, Peter Green (University of California Press, 1993). In the 4th century BC, the Greeks conquered the world. And that is where their problems began. When I was a child first getting interested in ancient history, the books I read followed a smooth narrative process. The story of the Greeks began with Athenian democracy and the victories at Marathon, Salamis, and Plataea that saved Western civilization from Persian conquest.
‘Dark Woke’ is nothing new
Ever in need of new narratives to feed into the bottomless abyss that is American political analysis, TikTok spelunkers and X addicts have delivered a new concept to be immediately overused and driven into the ground: “Dark Woke.” It’s woke, but dark. Somehow, things get lamer from there.
Republican Spokesman, for Some Reason, Mocks Photo of Biden Holding Young Son
The Slatest The tweet above was posted by a Republican “rapid response” spokesman named Steve Guest on Monday, apparently as a “rapid response” to the Washington NFL team’s announcement that it will no longer use the “Redskins” nickname or logo. Joe Biden’s Facebook page had previously posted the photo attached to the tweet on Father’s Day. Like much MAGA political messaging, the exact meaning of Guest’s post is hard to parse even though its intended effect (insulting Biden) is not.

One of President Ronald Reagan’s leading biographers says that Reagan carried a concealed handgun for about 14 years following his attempted assassination at the hands of John Hinckley Jr., confirming a recent claim made by author Brad Meltzer. Rebels Without a Cause
The Occupy Wall Street protest is nearing its fourth week and shows no signs of ending just yet. A march across the Brooklyn Bridge drew over a thousand people and led to the arrest of some 700, and similar protests have begun to pop up around America. Hoping to gain some insight into the whole affair, I went there myself last Friday, September 30th. That day, the protestors marched to One Police Plaza ostensibly to demonstrate against police brutality.

House Republicans Move To Weaken Congressional Ethics Office Via @dailycaller
In an abrupt move made without the backing of their leaders, Republicans in the House of Representatives plan to dramatically scale back an independent congressional ethics office created eight years ago. OCE is designed to have a non-partisan structure, and it operates independently of Congress.
These Will Be The Five Biggest Education Issues Of 2017 Via @dailycaller
2017 could be a year of chaos in education. In contrast to previous years, when the stakes in education were easy to see at the outset, what will happen this year is almost anybody’s guess. Unsurprisingly, this uncertainty is all thanks to presidential victor Donald Trump. Had former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton won, education would be easy to gauge; she almost certainly would have continued President Barack Obama’s policies with a big push for debt-free college.

Star Will Pass Near Sun, Bathe Earth In Barrage Of Deadly Comets Via @dailycaller
A new scientific paper warns that a nearby star will pass extremely close to Earth, potentially bombarding the planet with a wave of deadly comets. Don’t worry, though. It won’t happen for another million years. Gliese 710, a star with about 60 percent of the sun’s mass, is still 64 light years away from Earth. But that distance is closing rapidly (in cosmic terms), and it’s believed Gliese will make its closest approach in about 1.35 million years.

It worked by tracking arrivals from countries with active terrorist groups.

Hillary Clinton Loses A THIRD Of Washington’s Electoral Votes Via @dailycaller
Former Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton lost four of her electoral votes Monday, thanks to faithless electors in Washington state who cast their votes for Colin Powell and American Indian activist Faith Spotted Eagle. Washington has only 12 electoral votes, so a full third of its electors refused to vote for Clinton despite her easily winning the state’s popular vote. Vice presidential voting was even more chaotic, with electors giving votes not only to Sen. Tim Kaine but also to Sen.
