Prescott's Lady Blacksmith
Blacksmith shops were a common sight in western frontier towns and were part of the economic fiber of these early communities. Blacksmiths would use the metal from broken or worn-out metal tools, hinges, horseshoes and wagon parts as source metal for new pieces, saving on the cost of new metals. They were the only ready source of horseshoes, nails, and metal items for wagons and households. In 1870 there were only two blacksmith shops in Prescott, Arizona Territory.

LETTER: Abraham Lincoln didn’t win a majority of the popular vote
Bob Baker Las Vegas May 14, 2023 - 9:01 pm Before we all forget, President Abraham Lincoln won the Electoral College with less than 40 percent of the popular vote in the 1860 presidential election, He then turned out to be the right person at the right time and also — before we forget — one of our greatest presidents. So I am — and I hope a lot of other people will be also — for keeping the Electoral College just the way our Founding Fathers put it in place.

Written by Bob Baker Art by Stephen B. Scott Cutaway Comics, out now What happened after the Doctor and Sarah left Nunton… An extra for the Omega releases, this is one of the most confident issues yet from Cutaway Comics. Baker takes to the storytelling requirements of the comic with ease, and there’s some really dynamic art from Stephen B. Scott and colourist Andrew Orton that really feels as if it’s a story being told in October 1976, straight after The Hand of Fear aired on TV.

Column: A nice sense of human
As someone who routinely wears out erasers on pencils, I’m preconditioned to being wrong. But to my happy surprise once every century or so it turns out that I’m wrong in a nice way — as was the case with Salem Hospital recently. I went to the ER at Salem Hospital the other evening in search of answers to medical questions. I returned home the following afternoon having received extremely proficient professional treatment and answers to my questions.

Column: A cheer for Penny Wig
Penny Wigglesworth, a native Marbleheader who passed away in Naples, Florida, at the end of May, was a bright spirit who added a spark of life and love to just about everything she touched. Her specialty was “cheer.” She seemed to constantly find new ways to “cheer” — whether it was to “cheer on” (praise, encourage and support people), “cheer up” (comfort, uplift spirits and ease concerns of people, or just plain make people feel good about themselves and life in general.

It’s time to stop the overreaching
By Bob Baker, Las Vegas Sunday, July 14, 2019 | 2 a.m. There has to be other people who are getting leery of all these executive orders flying every which way. Now we even have presidential candidates, before they’re even in office, talking about issuing executive orders. I believe this mainly started with President Harry Truman when he sent troops into Korea without a declaration of war, and since then, president after president has used it more and more.

Remembering Nelson Benton, 'human Rolodex'
When I read the sad news of Nelson Benton’s passing in November and saw retired reporter Tom Dalton’s description of the former editor of the Salem News as its “public face,” I nodded in agreement. When I caught the “larger than life” reference from Mayor Kim Driscoll, I gave a double nod. Given my own experiences with Nelson, combined with the tributes following his passing, I’d say he was not only “the face” of The Salem News, he was the heart, adrenaline and hands, as well.
