Great Talkers Don’t Obey Stop Signs
— I am awed by great talkers —all the more so since that’s not me. I’m awed by their command of content—whether it’s a detailed critique of their organization’s position in the marketplace or an off-the-cuff discourse on the fourth industrial revolution. Enviably, they retain what they read. It’s all at their fingertips. I’m awed by the power and ease of their delivery—the moxie to hold forth at length, all eyes on them, their ability to recount an intricate story, their way with words.
To Grow is to Grapple
To grow is to grapple with what stands in the way of change, much of which is in your head. The challenge is to get whatever it is—a screwy thought, a needless fear—out of the way. That’s where grappling comes in. To raise your game as a leader, it’s often not enough to work on your form, your technique. You typically also need to work on your mental game, adjusting it in some way. Blockers to Growth There are two broad classes of mental blocks: crooked thinking and trigger points.
City Corner: Ashland Electric — the power is in our hands - Ashland News - Community-Supported, NonProfit News
By Bob Kaplan Did you know that Ashland is one of just 12 Oregon municipalities that owns its electric utility? It’s a fascinating history that started more than a hundred years ago; read about it here on the city’s website. This visionary move has provided many advantages to Ashland residents over the years. What’s more, with all the focus on renewable energy and climate change these days, owning our electric company has positioned Ashland exceptionally well for the future.
Op-ed | A unified front: NYC public schools’ courageous stand against hatred
As a Jewish leader in New York City, I have borne witness to the unique challenges our community faces amidst global tensions that often seep into our local lives. It is within this challenging environment that the New York City Public School System (NYCPS), under the leadership of Chancellor David C. Banks, has stood as a principled light against the waves of antisemitism and all forms of hate. New York City is home to the largest Jewish community outside of Israel.
Council Corner: Residential water rates in Ashland
By Bob Kaplan I’ve had several conversations recently about Ashland’s water rates. Are they high? Are they low? How are they set? Not surprisingly, it’s complicated! Each city chooses its own mix of flat monthly fees and consumption charges to cover costs, along with how steeply rates should climb for households that consume the most water. Medford charges extra to deliver water to households at higher elevations. Grants Pass includes a “water plant replacement fee” in its flat monthly charge.
Council Corner: Managing our water resources
By Bob Kaplan I’ve been a water geek since before I went to Paraguay with the Peace Corps as a water and sanitation volunteer at age 21. So it was fun to join Ashland’s ad hoc water advisory committee last year, when city staff and consultants were due to update our Water Management and Conservation Master Plan. I was eager to do a deep dive into all the factors that help us ensure access to sufficient water for the next 20 years and beyond.
Council Corner: City Government of, by and for the people
By Bob Kaplan When we talk about the work of our city councilors, most of us probably think about what takes place in the business meetings and study sessions held in council chambers. But there’s a whole lot more to the job. For one thing, we get lots of email! I try to respond promptly (except to boilerplate email that’s all the same) and often suggest getting together over coffee or tea to continue the conversation.

Hotel Lawyer: Increasing Distressed Hotel Loans and Troubled Hotel Assets This article was published originally in November 2008 on HotelLawBlog.com and then updated in 2010 for our Lenders Handbook for Troubled Hotels.
