Bob Ley and Grayle Howlett Join Kevin and Chris to Pay Tribute to Journalist Grant Wahl - Celebrating the Man, His Heart, His Passion, and His Impact on the World of Soccer. | Over The Ball with Kevin Flynn and Chris Chamides | Episode 226
Early Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022 soccer journalist Grant Wahl died suddenly while covering the World Cup match between Argentina and the Netherlands. Wahl, one of the most well-known and respected soccer writers in the United States, was loved throughout the soccer world and beyond. Well-known and celebrated for his heart, passion, integrity, and incredible knowledge of the game, Grant’s passing shocked the world and the soccer community.
Got a minute? Afterward
The kitchen sink is piled high with dirty pots, pans, dishes, glasses, and silverware. Wrapping paper and ribbons and bows painstakingly applied a week ago, are strewn about the living room. The kids are racing through the house, fueled by the adrenaline excitement of Christmas morning. I’m ensconced in my recliner, nearly dozing off after a late night of being Santa.
Got a minute? Spring's coming!
You can almost feel it! Only about a hundred more days and it’ll officially be spring! I enjoy having a little snow (preferring flurries that only make the grass white, not the streets). Also I prefer them to be around only on Christmas Eve for what I call a “get-in-the-mood” snow. A touch of it in the air, as long as it’s not sticking, does wonders. I am really not sure what has happened to me over the years. As a kid, I loved snow. Especially when school was called off.
Got a minute? Where would you live?
If you could live anywhere within the United States, where would you choose? Think of it as a bucket list of places you’ve thought about or dreamed about! While realizing the many things that serve to limit your choices, imagine them solved. Maybe you have, or could get, a job that allowed you to work from home…wherever it is. Children, if grown, would ideally be able to visit occasionally. All logistical problems are solved. So where would you locate?
Got a minute? Miss you guys!
I have greatly missed the twice-monthly meetings of the Rainy Day Writers at the Crossroads Library. We are still writing from home, but the camaraderie, challenges, and good-natured ribbing is missing. Story ideas come from the bantering among the group. None of us imagine ourselves as the next John Steinbeck or Louisa Mae Alcott but there is a lot of talent in the group. Even though there are only ten of us, we can be prolific.
Got a minute? A little FB fun
Facebook seems to have drifted into the current political leanings like most forms of communication these days. That is, there is a lot of hardline disliking of one another should beliefs not coincide. We have gotten so polarized that once in a while something downright funny appears that makes me remember why I use Facebook in the first place. For example…“I saw a one-legged man at the ATM.
Got a Minute? Here we go again
The upcoming presidential elections are showing every indication of being the meanest, down-in-the-dirt campaigns ever run. Both participants and their respective parties are guilty, as well as many supporters and the media. I wouldn’t expect complete agreement, or even the willingness to agree to disagree. It sure seems the dirty tricks, and the twisting of words taken out of context, could be tamped down.
Got a minute? What happened to Cambridge?
Dad had a business he wanted to expand. In 1963, he sent me to Cambridge to “scout” the city for another menswear store. The year 1963 was before the malls, the internet, and the interstates. Most retail businesses were “brick and mortar” stores. Most shopping was done locally. A trip to Columbus was an occasion, rarely used. Arriving in Cambridge, I located my competitors.
Got a Minute? Shopping … then and now
As I write this in September, I am starting to see Christmas decorations arrive in several stores. After being raised in the retail world, and with 50-plus years’ experience, it no longer shocks me. Right now, I have seen simultaneous displays of Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. In my first years of retailing, Christmas was not mentioned until after Thanksgiving. Back then, most stores were closed on Sundays, too. Malls changed that.
Got a minute? Buying a car in 2020
My daughter recently missed a turn at a highway exit construction zone which was poorly marked. Unfortunately, she ran over a pile of stones, ripping the underside from her car. The police agreed the zone was minimally marked and did not cite her. The insurance company declared her car a total loss. She and her daughter were the only occupants and were not injured.
A Look Back at Bob Ley's ESPN Career
Bob Ley’s Statement: Across 40 years I have enjoyed a professional journey unimaginable when I joined ESPN on its first weekend of existence in 1979. Each day since has been a unique adventure, one I embraced for the challenge and unequaled fun of a job like no other. Now, it is time for change. I will be retiring from ESPN, as of the end of the month. To be clear, this is entirely my decision.

Deep Rough: Notes on Jeff Benedict and Armen Keteyian's Shoddy, Mean-Spirited New Biography of Tiger Woods
to emerge from the earth-scorching new biography of Tiger Woods, cowritten by Jeff Benedict and Armen Keteyian, the inevitable push and pull over the facts advertises itself as an unflinching look at one of the world's most famous athletes, and indeed it spares little in the way of sordid details, real and invented.
ESPN afflicted with Robert E. Lee phobia
I wrote this two days ago about the hysteria to remove all traces of the Confederacy from polite society: First they came for the statues. Then they came for the names. I was talking about Traveler, the four-legged mascot who is under fire because Robert E. Lee’s horse was named Traveller. If you think that purge attempt is an overreaction, I hope you’re sitting down when you read the latest from the cultural cleansing front.
