First grade teachers need extra pay — at the least
Bob Miller The schools are really short of substitutes. Maybe after reading my column, you will want to join the ranks. I have been subbing for several years and this is a true story from a couple of years ago. Case in point for why first grade teachers should get extra pay. Oakhurst Elementary School. I am signed up to sub for Mrs. Newell’s first grade class. I notice that there are 24 students on the roll sheet. That seems manageable, I naively think to myself. And Mrs. Newel has left me a de...
Donald Trump as football coach in 2030
Bob Miller There have been reports that Donald Trump has finally chilled a bit and has developed a funny bone. His chief advisor, Sharpy, has explained to him that the First Amendment protects freedom of speech, and rumors are being spread that he is patching things up with Jimmy Kimmel and Steven Colbert. I hope those rumors are right, and I don’t get into hot water for this little satire today. Because I have discovered the secret of time travel, I will let you in on a shocking event. After Do...

The many lessons learned at River Creek Golf Course
Bob Miller Where did you pick up those important life lessons? You know, the ones that teach you how to act in a civilized way. And the ones that let you accept the bad and the good. And the ones that build character? I’m sure we have all had teachers or coaches to thank for not letting us be liars or cheaters or bullies. And our teammates and peers were there to knock us down if we got to bragging about how smart or good we were. A lot of those lessons also came from our parents and grandparent...

The New Year’s Diet Resolution
Bob Miller Did you make a New Year’s resolution for 2026? Can you believe that it is already 2026? Do you remember when the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey came out and the year 2001 was so far in the future? And now it’s 25 years in the past! And finally “Artificial Intelligence” is no longer science fiction. There are going to be a gazillion “Als”in our lives that may see us as threats and instead of jettisoning us into outer space, they will simply take our jobs and make us irrelevant. But back t...
A last-ditch Christmas wish list
Bob Miller I imagine that only the insanely procrastinated among us are still wondering what to get the dear ones in their lives for Christmas. I make a point of buying months ahead of time expensive jewelry for my wife. (Can you hear her scoffing laughter as she reads this?) But because this is a humor column that my dedicated 10 or 12 fans read each month, I have decided to tongue-in-cheek give some gift ideas for your favorite and not so favorite people. I’m hoping because “it is the season,”...
The true sport of Black Friday shopping
Bob Miller How do you approach Black Friday? I’ve seen TV videos of shoppers elbowing and shoving others out of the way to get to that last Cabbage Patch doll or that last Samsung TV bigger than a barn door that is on sale for less than what you can pay for a Costco hot dog. I doubt that I will ever barge into a store as soon as it opens its doors and start running for something that I probably don’t need anyway. And if I ever do, I will be sure to wear a football helmet and shoulder and elbow ...
Motel California: A travel blunder of epic proportions
Bob Miller I’m thinking that I may get few responses from readers for my “Super Cool Challenge” last week. Just a minor blunder — my gmail address was “accidentally” cut off the bottom of my column. Here it is: writerbob46@gmail.com So here is another challenge. If you have ever made an “epic” blunder that turned out to be humorous send it in to me at my gmail address writerbob46@gmail.com Have you ever tried to reserve a motel room via phone while traveling and found out that you booked a mote...
A ‘Super Cool Challenge’ for column readers
Now that I have made enough fun of myself in this humor column during the past two months to embarrass a normal person, I want to share with you an experience of mine that wasn’t just “cool,” it was “super cool.” And at the end of this column today, I am issuing a challenge for readers of my column — all eight or nine of them at last count — to submit their own story about a super cool thing that they have done or someone that they know has done. I won an arm wrestling contest with the e...
Return to Kenny’s Mountain, Part II
Shown is Kenny when he was 11 years old. Editor’s note: This is the final in a two-part series. Part one of this series tells the story of Kenny, age 12, getting lost in the meadow and the importance of the mountain where he was found. Shown is a view of Stevens Peak from Hope Valley. Aug. 15, 2025: the day of reckoning is nearly here. I feel confident that I can make the climb, but there are still some doubts. My last attempt from Scott’s Lake several years prior had been a struggle. I had take...
High finance — balancing that darn checkbook - Mariposa Gazette
Bob Miller I am not ashamed to say that my wife, Sharon, handles the banking in our household. I know, some people with a macho, 20th century attitude think that controlling the purse strings is man’s dominion. Or perhaps they are just afraid that if the wife handles the money matters, she will take off for Fresno on a shopping holiday. Or go hog wild with TV/internet buying binges. Fat chance of that happening in this house. Sharon’s idea of a shopping spree is to take all those CVS coupons dow...

The great wine tasting challenge
Bob Miller Do you remember when you first imbibed? I mean the alcoholic stuff. I do. It was at my bachelor party — a rather sad affair; just my dad and my brother and me. We were at a pizza parlor in Stockton and my brother ordered a pitcher of beer. Doug, my brother and two years older, had earned a reputation at UC Davis grad school. Blindfolded, he could sip a beer and correctly identify the brand — Budweiser, Michelob, Miller, etc. On the other hand, I could tell a Pepsi from a Coke or an R...
Count your keys, please, it’s a crucial of secret about life
Bob Miller Editor’s note: This is a new column in the newspaper that will run monthly. (Or maybe more often ... or maybe not.) I think that I have found a simple way to see if your life is too complicated. Count your keys. If you have more than five or six keys, your life is not as simple — tension free, more leisure time, etc. — as it could be. If you have too many keys to fit on one key chain, or you have to attach them to your belt, your life, like mine, is way too complicated. I remember t...

Milton Magnus vs. China: One Man’s Trade War

LEEDS, Ala.—In a squat, beige building attached to a factory that churns out steel wire hangers, Milton Magnus was on the phone again, trying to persuade customers to stick with him, rather than switching to cheaper hangers from Asia. When Magnus, 72 years old, hung up the phone, he peered at a database of shipments to the U.S. His eyes were tired.

Political fighting may hamper us for generations
Bob Miller, Port Orchard Kitsap Sun Prior to passing in 2021, my father often told me of his concern for where this country was headed, and how he was glad he probably wouldn't be around to see what happens. As the country struggles with homelessness, mental health, as well as foreign issues, the elected officials at the seat of the federal government continue their backbiting, tit-for-tat political brinkmanship.

A look at Piher and their double-acting clamps
Blog Piher's system can increase clamping pressure while allowing more control. By Bob Miller May 17, 2021 The picturesque city of Logroño in the north of Spain is known for its lovely medieval city center, the Rioja wine the region is known to produce, its fine 16th-century cathedral, as well as the kind and friendly people who live along the banks of the river Ebro. Apart from being a lovely place to spend a holiday, Logroño is also known for something entirely different.

A reminder that it's time to sharpen
It is time to talk about something that many woodworkers fear to discuss, and fail to do as often as they should. Sharpening. I firmly believe that a dull tool is not only dangerous but saps time and energy from your work. When a tool is dull it requires more force and effort to push it through the work, and that makes the tool less predictable in use.
Preservation bias
Blog The period furniture you see today is but a slim slice of woodworking's history—the wealthy slice. By Bob Miller Jan 11, 2021 In any discussion about period furniture there is a historic concept that is critically important but often goes overlooked. That is the historic concept of preservation bias. In its simplest terms, the idea of preservation bias is that not everything survives at the same rate into the historic record.
Go clean your blades!
Woodworker’s public service announcement: Clean the gunk off of your blades!! Seriously, go look at your blades, particularly the circular sawblades that you use most regularly. Chances are, the faces of the carbide cutting edges are caked with gunk. That gunk is the resin and pitch from the wood that has been heated by the cutting action. When you are passing stock across a spinning tool, no matter how sharp it is, there is some friction. The byproduct of that friction is heat.

A closer look at oak
Most people never think about wood on the cellular level, but in one particular instance we owe quite a debt to the cellular structure of white oak. The type of cell that makes white oak special is the parenchyma cell, which is largely responsible for storage of nutrients in living trees.
OPINION: Guest Column: Our schools are not ready
Jessica Wender-Shubow and Bob Miller / brookline@wickedlocal.com Thursday Oct 8, 2020 at 3:55 PM Oct 8, 2020 at 3:55 PM Beginning in May, and officially since July 14 when we called for negotiations, the Brookline Educators Union has sought to ensure that the District successfully schedules, staffs, and sustains healthy and safe in-person learning.
Moorish design - FineWoodworking
My first experience traveling far from home was an educational trip to the south of Spain. This trip exposed me for the first time to a rich and varied culture that far predates that of my home. This exposure would have a profound impact on me and eventually my woodworking, the effects of which would not become fully known for years. On this journey I was able to visit some of the great architectural wonders of Al-Andalus, the region of southern Spain now known as Andalusia.
The incredible carvings of Zanzibar
Many people have heard of Zanzibar, but few associate it with woodworking. They really should. Zanzibar is an archipelago of two large islands and many smaller islands that sits off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian ocean (click here for a map). After the 1963 revolution, Zanzibar became independent and a year later, in 1964, was joined with the newly formed independent nation of Tanzania as a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania.
Letter to the Editor: Educators went the extra mile
Bob Miller / brookline@wickedlocal.com Saturday Aug 1, 2020 at 9:00 AM Responding to the opinion piece concerning equity in the Brookline Schools, it should be made clear that the educators’ very first consideration in planning an end of the year parade was to make sure every student was included. Brookline educators are always thinking about inclusion and equity and strive to ensure that all students have the same opportunities to enjoy school events equally.
It's time Thomas Day took his place alongside Townsend, Phyfe, and the others
Blog An innovative and skilled pre-Civil War craftsman, Thomas Day was one of the leading figures of American furniture. By Bob Miller Jun 26, 2020 There is a name missing from the list of early American furniture makers, and that name is Thomas Day. Day was born in 1801 in Virginia, and worked in the early part of the 19th century as a furniture maker in Milton, N.C., until his death in 1861.
A simple way to rout miter slots
Shop Tips Bob Miller shares a simple way to do a simple task–accurately routing miter-slot extensions in an outfeed table. By Bob Miller Jun 15, 2020 All tablesaws need outfeed support in one form or another. Sometimes that support comes in the form of a helper catching the work as it comes off the saw, but more often than not the support comes from a table of some sort attached to the back edge of the tablesaw. These outfeed tables are critical to the safety and predictably of using a tablesaw.
Shopmade racks simplify finishing
Blog Bob Miller shares the racks he made to hold parts while finishing and drying. By Bob Miller May 04, 2020 Lets face it: Finishing is nobody’s favorite thing to do in the shop. One of the reasons many people detest finishing is that they are struggling to hold the work in a way that makes it easy to finish, limits contact with the work as much as possible, and allows the finish to dry properly. Here are two methods among many that I use for holding work in the finishing room.

The importance of working clean
Blog Bob Miller shares lessons from a 108-sq.-ft. bench space By Bob Miller Apr 08, 2020 My personal bench space is a mere 108 sq. ft. with access to a larger shared machine room. Given that I have such limited space to call my own, I have to work clean. And given the frantic flurry of cleaning going on in the world right now, this is a great time to talk about working clean in the shop.
Happy Grease Day!
Blog To help fight the urge to be lazy about maintenance, Bob Miller selects a single day a year to grease and lubricate all of the bearings in the shop. By Bob Miller Feb 26, 2020 Grease Day should be a holiday on every woodworker’s calendar. Of course I am joking about making it a holiday, but only in the slightest sense. Many woodworkers are in it for the woodworking, not for the machine maintenance.

The fascinating Art Nouveau style
Blog Bob Miller examines the Art Nouveau style, which is often marked by sumptuous and conspicuous use of material matched to a hugely laborious process. By Bob Miller Jan 24, 2020 By Sailko - Own work, CC BY 3.0, Link The Art Nouveau style has always fascinated me, and as I learned more about it I was even more enamored with it. Taking a step back, I was a historian in my previous life, and I guess I still think like one from time to time.
The Power of Pattern Routing
Blog While most woodworkers are aware of top- and bottom-bearing pattern bits, Bob Miller says you should consider adding one more to your arsenal. By Bob Miller Dec 04, 2019 Pattern routing with a bearing-guided bit is easily one of the most powerful techniques in woodworking. A pattern bit allows us to easily and repeatably create nearly any shape, as well as work from a pattern made of easy-to-shape materials and then use that pattern to shape materials that are much harder to work.
The Merits of Shop Class
Blog Bob Miller argues that the purpose of shop class is not to create woodworkers or welders, but instead to help bring revolutionary ideas to fruition. By Bob Miller Oct 23, 2019 The purpose of shop class is not to create woodworkers or welders. In the same way, the purpose of English class is not to create writers, nor is biology class taught with the single goal of creating doctors or scientists.
