This fall, four candidates are vying for three seats on the 9-member South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education: Trish Azeez, Liz Callahan, Kevin Diaz, and Will Meyer. Village Green is posting endorsements for candidates from current and former elected officials who hold or held townwide office or higher, as well as endorsements by local organizations. We ask that endorsers coordinate with candidates for full guidelines. Read more election coverage here.
Oprah Winfrey Recalls Begging Audience to Keep Whitney Houston’s Stage Fall Secret
video posted by Variety, she recalled, "We did the whole, ‘Hey, girl, how you doing?’ greeting thing and then I stopped the cameras and I went behind stage and I said, ‘So, tell me, what do you want to happen here?
The nicest AI in the room is the one you should actually worry about
AI that provides quick, confident and frictionless responses that affirm exactly what the prompter already believes means nothing’s being challenged, and nothing meaningful is actually being learnt. We’re not talking about this risk enough. Especially when you consider that over a third of users in Irish businesses consistently believe AI always produces factually accurate responses and in the UK this figure is similar with 36% saying it’s ‘always accurate’.
The nicest AI in the room is the one you should actually worry about
Bobby Brown AI agreeing with you can feel progressive. It feels efficient, aligned and reassuring. It taps in the innate human nature that we all love to be right. But, much like surrounding yourself with ‘yes' men can be uber counterproductive, businesseshave nothing to gain from AI that flatters their assumptions.

1980s teen pop sensation looks unrecognizable in new TikTok videos - decades after quitting the music industry
Former teen idol Glenn Medeiros shot to fame in the 1980s with a string of unforgettable hits, but the pop sensation quietly faded from the public eye in the following decade. While fans still remember his music fondly, the popstar has been quietly building a successful life away from the limelight – and recently, he’s been spotted appearing in numerous TikTok videos thanks to his daughter, aspiring singer and internet personality, Lyric Medeiros.
Millie Bobby Brown's Latest Naked Look Takes a Cue From Lily Allen
No matter the season or the temperature, the naked-dressing trend is showing no signs of slowing down. While most of us are bundling up, the stars keep removing layers, with the past week alone offering us moments like Cardi B’s back-baring LBD and Dua Lipa’s lingerie-inspired lace Gucci set. Recently, one of the strongest proponents has been Millie Bobby Brown, who has embraced a number of sheer ensembles while promoting the final season of her hit sci-fi series Stranger Things.

Sad goodbye, goodbyes not farewell: Reflecting on a decade of dialogue and discovery
Bobby Brown | October 2, 2024 Goodbyes are always hard. They are especially hard when the relationship has been lengthy and survived many ups and downs. After nearly a decade, sadly, but to the delight of some I’m sure, this is my last column for the Daily Voice. And it is a bittersweet farewell, as this page is a weekly labour-of-love that always tests both my creativity and my critical thinking abilities.
The eye-blind behind disparaging the dead
Bobby Brown | September 24, 2024 “If you can’t say anything nice, then keep quiet.” This was one of the mottos that my mother used to live by. It was her view that you could angrily shoot your mouth off about something or someone, highlighting all the negatives, or you could say nothing. Saying nothing harms nobody, whereas talking badly about someone, harms their reputation, and also calls your own integrity into question.
Ruthless reckoning for racketeers: High-profile corruption cases signal hope for South African
Bobby Brown | September 24, 2024 More chickens are coming home to roost. And again it is reinforcing the lesson to those with corruption ambitions, that crime doesn’t pay. The reckoning should be celebrated with even greater excitement when it comes to those suspected of looting the public purse. Last week we had two such stories to make a song and dance about. The one was the highest court in the land ruling against the former head of the SABC Hlaudi Motsoeneng.
The internet claims more victims: Ou online posts come back to haunt Gouws and Cabanac
Bobby Brown | September 16, 2024 This is going to be a cautionary tale, especially for youngsters addicted to social media. I hope there are enough examples of why you need to be very careful about what you say and do online. One of the many problems with social media is that it lulls users into a false sense of safety. It’s given many people the impression that they can say and do as they please, without any consequences.
Another moral giant lost
Bobby Brown | September 16, 2024 I worry every time we lose another one of our moral giants. This was the case again when Pravin Gordhan died recently, at the age of 75. There has been much said and written about him since then. And rightfully so, since he has been a staple of government news since the advent of our democracy. For the most part, much of what we read and heard about him, seemed to be him trying to do what was best for the country.
Dooming the next generation
Bobby Brown | September 9, 2024 I am so bothered by the pending redundancy of 2 400 of the Western Cape’s teachers, that I have dug out previous opinions that I have written about the critical need for a better education system. I can guarantee you that if the children of our politicians attended public schools, this would not be happening. Thirty years into democracy and I’m wondering how we have tolerated an education system entirely driven by capitalism for as long as we have.
Too many chiefs, too few teachers: Cabinet should Be cut, not our kids’ education
Bobby Brown | September 9, 2024 The chopping of thousands of teacher jobs is by far the most disturbing news of this new administration. The new year could start with some 2 400 fewer teachers in Western Cape classrooms alone. In KwaZulu-Natal, the number of teaching jobs on the line is 11 000. Make no mistake, the long-term consequences will be nothing short of devastating. We are no longer borrowing from our children’s futures, we are stealing it completely.
New deal to tackle dismal crime stats
Bobby Brown | September 3, 2024 On average at least three people are murdered in South Africa per hour and three children are murdered every day. These were some of the grim crime statistics released last week by our new police bosses – minister Senzo Mchunu and national commissioner Fannie Masemola.
Honour amongst ‘thieves': MK Party MP choices are a bold move
Bobby Brown | September 2, 2024 Is Jacob Zuma trolling us? He has just appointed several men with massive dark clouds of suspicion hanging over their heads. To do this, Zuma summarily dismissed 15 of his loyal MPs, to make way for the newcomers. Amongst those sworn in last week as MPs were Brian Molefe, Siyabonga Gama, and Lucky Montana, all former CEOs of state-owned enterprises who faced scrutiny during Zuma's presidency for their involvement in state capture allegations.
Donner the fear of God into them: Society must drill ethics into laaities
Bobby Brown | August 26, 2024 Apparently the answer to all our problems at schools lies somewhere between corporal punishment and prayer. The article I wrote last week about playground violence was viewed close to 40 000 times and elicited more than 200 comments on our Facebook page, meaning it hit close to home and touched many nerves.
Eskom 44% hike plan is just shocking
Bobby Brown | August 26, 2024 I believe Eskom is busy with the classic eye blind. They are asking for a 44% increase in electricity tariffs. And of course everybody is up in arms, because such a price hike is simply unthinkable. As it is, anybody who isn’t super wealthy is worried sick about running out of units at the current rates. And it doesn’t help that the City of Cape Town is relentlessly cold when it comes to outstanding arrears.
Our children need our guidance
Bobby Brown | August 19, 2024 The kids are not OK. And I’m afraid it’s only getting worse. The examples we set as adults are clearly being imprinted and acted out. In the last two weeks there have been double stabbings at Cedar High School in Mitchells Plain, a murder at the Overberg High School in Caledon and a brutal beating outside Alexander Sinton High in Athlone. In each case, school-going teenagers were involved.
Blindsided by Pied Piper bureaucrats: Cult of personality is ruling politics
Bobby Brown | August 19, 2024 Emotions run high when high-profile politicians jump ship. Julius Malema’s EFF has been the victim a lot lately, but last week’s defection almost had him in tears. In fact, he likened the defection to his mother dying. And that’s because Floyd Shivambu wasn’t only his deputy president, he was also the party’s co-founder and Malema’s confidante.

The art of (fake) admiration: Public applause must be earned by SA ministers
Bobby Brown | August 13, 2024 ANC members are finally getting the message. Or at least they have been given the message to process and hopefully act upon. The message - “stop bragging about your lavish lifestyles, while others are suffering” - came from their president, Cyril Ramaphosa. While his motives were distinctly ulterior, saying it out loud was long overdue.
The sour milk of digging up old cows
Bobby Brown | August 12, 2024 Is the Miss SA pageant ever going to exist again without controversy? It seems that every year the skeletons of one of the beauties come tumbling out of the closet, miring the pageant in scandal. Previously we have mostly had old displays of prejudice and ugly behaviour being dug up. Previous scandals that scuppered the hopes of contestants included accusations of bullying and racist behaviour.
Our kids can be in space race
Bobby Brown | August 5, 2024 As a kid, whenever anyone asked me what I wanted to be one day, I would quickly and confidently say: “A NASA astronaut.” With the exception of one very sweet and encouraging teacher, just about everyone else moved between derision and looking at me sadly. For a very brief moment as a teenager, I toyed with the idea of moving to America to pursue my dream seriously.
Giving wings to Gayton’s dreams: SA children need equal opportunities
Bobby Brown | August 5, 2024 It’s so wonderful to see all the many colours at the Paris Olympics. It has prompted me to think about the things our new sports minister has been saying. Gayton McKenzie has shown that he understands the power of the rhyming quotable quote.
Self-serving hand of vanity
Bobby Brown | July 29, 2024 It’s not easy to do good deeds, especially if it’s on a large scale. For example, I am currently involved in a fascinating project that will give more than a dozen aspiring young broadcasters, valuable work experience. I am heading up the team that’s putting together a pop-up radio station for an international science conference happening at the CTICC from next week.
Trump the villain vs the super hero goddess?: New endgame in fight for the US
Bobby Brown | July 29, 2024 I have been forced to eat my words. Last week I pretty much handed America’s presidency to Donald Trump. If for no other reason than the fact that he got shot. Some people even suggested that the assassination attempt was staged for that very reason; to secure sympathy votes from the majority of those casting their ballots in November.
Trump’s victory almost assured
Bobby Brown | July 22, 2024 There are so many theories around the Donald Trump assassination attempt. Most intriguing is how the young shooter, Thomas Crooks, aged 20, managed to smuggle such a large rifle into an area so close to the stage. And why security personnel didn’t act when people pointed the rooftop shooter out to them.
It’s a cellphone, Not a cell phone: Authorities do have the means to block signal in our lawless prisons
Bobby Brown | July 22, 2024 My bors is warm gemaak. And it’s all the fault of that bragging prisoner who went on TikTok last week, laughing about how lekka his life behind bars is. His name is Bornface Banks and he was being held at Goodwood Prison, while facing kidnapping charges. It’s from inside there that he laughed in our faces, reminding us that he doesn’t have to pay for anything. “This morning, we had breakfast, in the afternoon we had lunch, and we are about to have dinner.

Bobby on the Beat: Has the spark returned to our relationship with Eskom?
Bobby Brown | July 16, 2024 We have survived survived more than 100 days with no load shedding. That is quite the milestone, especially considering that we are in the cold heart of winter, when demand is at its highest. In his recent newsletter, President Cyril Ramaphosa warned that our electricity system remains vulnerable and that we cannot rule out a possibility of further cuts. I truly hope that won’t be the case.
Bobby on the Beat: Can Madiba finally rest in peace?
Bobby Brown | July 16, 2024 It’s been eleven years since Nelson Mandela left us. This Thursday, he would have been 106 years old. I would have been curious to know how he feels about our politics having come full circle. He was, after all, our first leader of a Government of National Unity (GNU), at a time when the ANC was wildly popular and could easily have ruled on its own.
Let the hard work begin: Party rivalry In GNU Can benefit Mzansi
Bobby Brown | July 8, 2024 Our Government of National Unity is out of the starting blocks and trotting along, heading for the straight. It’s the straight that will test their mettle most, where we will be able to see if their actions match their election promises. The problem is that this is not a smooth straight. It’s more like a cross-country race that will include all manner of hurdles, handicaps and hazards to negotiate.
Beware of enemy within, ministers
Bobby Brown | July 8, 2024 It’s not going to be easy for our new ministers. I am talking about the ones who are from parties other than the ANC. Our new Government of National Unity is made up of ten parties and they have all been given positions at the very top levels of our executive, as ministers and deputy ministers. Here’s the problem. The ANC has openly engaged in years of cadre deployment at all levels of government.
Lets play politics-politics
Bobby Brown | July 2, 2024 Yes, we simply have to get this country right, Mr President. Absolutely everything depends on it; economic growth and prosperity, social harmony, communal aspirations, our individual sanity and yes, even the re-election hopes of your ruling party. This is no longer a legacy or altruistic project of choice. Turning things around is now critical and in the best interest of everyone and everything.
Hitting the ground crawling: Parties in GNU must keep each other on their toes
Bobby Brown | July 2, 2024 I feel like I need to do some basic education again around the logic of opposition politics. I keep reading comments blatantly calling the DA a racist party that only looks after the interests of white capital and big business. I can’t say for sure whether that is the case, but I can make a few logic-based observations. Whether the DA is a racist party or not almost doesn’t matter at this point in time. What does matter is a strong opposition.
The revolving door of homelessness
Bobby Brown | June 24, 2024 The City’s homeless crisis was threatening to become our next pandemic. Last week, city bosses finally got the legal go-ahead to remove dozens of homeless people from the CBD’s streets, by force if necessary. The group outside the Castle will remain untouched though, because the land falls under the ambit of the National Government. This means the others that are being evicted, can in theory simply just relocated to the Castle.
Renaldo scores own goal: Racist videos come back to haunt DA MP
Bobby Brown | June 24, 2024 The internet never forgets, it’s a hard lesson that some people refuse to learn. Last week, it was the turn of Renaldo Gouws to be schooled. One moment, he was a newly appointed and elated DA MP. The next moment he was a disgraced “racist,” who spewed angry vitriol into a camera as a young man. You will recall similar ugly histories coming back to haunt two Miss SA finalists Levern Jose and Bianca Schoombee.
Putting SA first is key: Parties must unite, compromise to move Mzansi forward
Bobby Brown | June 10, 2024 The momentousness of this week cannot be overstated. This is the week in which the next five years of our political future is being decided. Today (Monday) both the ANC and the DA are gathering their respective leaderships to plot the way forward. Others are also in deep discussions to decide their fate and that of their voters.
Time to think of the 2029 elections: Critical thinkers are a threat to a status quo
Bobby Brown | June 3, 2024 There’s a very disconcerting thing about our modern democracy – the very real chance that your government doesn’t represent you at all. An even greater worry is that this is the case for most people around the world. Now that our elections are over and we prepare for a shuffling (not a changing) of the guard, hear me out. It’s a bit statistical, but still very interesting, and upsetting at the same time.

Vote like yours is the only one that matters: Consider this before 29 May
Bobby Brown | May 27, 2024 It’s election week and there are several things that can’t go unsaid. None of it is meant to convince you one way or another. But they are meant to highlight a few truths to help you think through our political landscape, hopefully a bit more clearly. Firstly, it’s important to understand that our democracy is not just about your needs and expectations alone.

High-profile people like to use sick card
Bobby Brown | May 27, 2024 Nothing brings on serious illness quicker than a warrant-of-arrest, or the prospect of time behind bars, it seems. I don’t mean to be flippant about people’s ill health, but I can’t help but notice how this trend has taken off over the years. Whether as a way to garner sympathy, or set the stage for early parole, the phenomenon keeps rearing its head, causing us to throw our hands up in the air in collective disbelief.
Skollies mowing down innocents
Bobby Brown | May 20, 2024 Are we teetering on the brink of anarchy? It certainly feels like it at times, especially when I read how innocent people are being slaughtered by barbaric gangsters. Generally, I don’t feel much sympathy when they are killing each other. I would rather not have the kids spectating over their dead bodies in the streets, but that is sadly what we have allowed our society to evolve into.
NHI’s weak pulse is better than no pulse at all: We accept it won’t be flawless at first
Bobby Brown | May 20, 2024 Now that the president has breathed life into the National Health Insurance Bill, it’s time to nurse it into wellbeing. The idea behind the NHI is noble, but as I have said before, the doubters, critics and naysayers shouldn’t be ignored. They are concerned that the fund will be centrally managed, with the health minister having the final say over how funds are allocated. Given our politicians’ penchant for corruption, that is of course a genuine worry.
