Urothelial carcinoma (UC), which accounts for greater than 90% of all bladder cancers [1], is one of the ten predominant malignancies worldwide [2]. Systemic, platinum-based chemotherapy, introduced nearly 30 years ago, remains the standard of care for untreated patients with locally advanced or metastatic UC; this treatment is associated with a median overall survival (OS) of 13–15 months and a 5-year survival rate of approximately 15% [3–7].
