High school notebook: Hoops standout Jeremiah Pratt is emerging as a star quarterback at Western Beaver
Western Beaver football has rebounded from a 1-4 start by ripping off four straight wins to not only clinch a spot in the playoffs but also put itself in position to win a conference title. And while believing in one another and trusting the process are partly responsible for that, the biggest reason for the turnaround might be the emergence of its new quarterback. Jeremiah Pratt’s impact has been that enormous.

Post-Gazette football rankings: Big tests are coming this week for the top-ranked WPIAL teams
Top-ranked teams in the WPIAL have been holding serve for weeks now, but the final slate of the regular season will present tests for many of them. A monster matchup between Class 2A heavyweights Bishop Canevin (9-0) and Seton LaSalle (9-0) headlines an exceptional Week 10 schedule. Bishop Canevin is ranked No. 1 in the WPIAL and No. 2 in the PIAA, while Seton LaSalle is No. 2 in the WPIAL and No. 3 in the state.
Beaver County Christian boys soccer enters the WPIAL playoffs with a stingy defense and lots to prove
Beaver County Christian enters the WPIAL Class 1A boys soccer playoffs fresh off of a third consecutive section championship while allowing only five goals in Section 1 play. Coach Chris Crefeld led the middle school team before stepping over to varsity for the last three years. That experience has helped form a deep pipeline and a tight-knit junior class that has been part of all three of the recent championships.
WPIAL girls volleyball playoff preview: For the first time, six champions will be crowned
The WPIAL will crown six girls volleyball champions for the first time in history, as the PIAA expanded from four to six classifications for the 2026 season. Seventy-six of the WPIAL's 124 teams have qualified for the playoffs, which is also a record. Three of last year's four winners have qualified, but only one is a defending champion in its classification: Eden Christian in Class 1A. Beaver Area, last year's Class 3A champion, did not qualify after moving up to Class 4A.
Breaking down the WPIAL football playoff picture heading into the final Friday of the regular season
The final Friday night of the WPIAL football regular season is only a few days away. Just call it a grand finale. The WPIAL makes teams’ schedules, and if it was executive director Vince Sortino’s objective to have a plethora of big games on the final night, then he made this schedule with a crystal ball. There are no records to prove it, but you’ll have a hard time finding a final Friday in WPIAL history with so many games deciding a conference championship.

Extra Points: Westinghouse's DaeJour Pinckney is a power on the field who empowers people off of it
DaeJour Pinckney admits he wasn't always the most positive person. It's not that Pinckney was a negative kid. He just kind of kept to himself, partly because of what he would hear others say to him. "I felt like a loser," Pinckney said. "I was told I was a waste of height and that certain things won't happen.

WPIAL Class 6A, 5A, 4A and City League football roundup: Chartiers Valley escapes with win against Ringgold
A controversial touchdown late in the fourth quarter gave Chartiers Valley the deciding points in a 27-20 win against visiting Ringgold in a Class 4A Big Six Conference game played Friday. Zach Efthimiades ran 71 yards for a touchdown with 3 minutes left in the fourth quarter after catching a fumble by quarterback Owen Weagraff. The video replay clearly showed that Weagraff was on his knees when he fumbled forward, but the referees allowed the touchdown.
Upper St. Clair football uses the big play to take down Thomas Jefferson
For Upper St. Clair, the big plays came early and often Friday in its big showdown against Thomas Jefferson. From a 53-yard pass play on the first play from scrimmage to a 50-yard run on their final drive of the game, the Panthers got their fill of chunk plays. “Big plays are the best thing of all time,” Upper St. Clair quarterback Josh Snyder said.

Here are some top games on tap for district high school football in Week 9: Game of the week Thomas Jefferson at Upper St. Clair, 7 p.m. Friday: In a week full of showdowns in Class 5A, this might be the best of the bunch. With a win, No. 3 Upper St. Clair (8-0, 3-0) can clinch at least a share of the Allegheny Six Conference title. The Panthers will travel to West Allegheny (2-1 in the conference) in Week 10.
Defending champ University Prep is headed back to the City League final after thumping Brashear Original
Sebastian Foltz/Post-Gazette Brad Everett Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Oct 23, 2026 2:41 AM University Prep edged Brashear by three points when the teams met last month. Thursday’s rematch wasn’t nearly as close. Judah Jackson ran for 124 yards and four touchdowns to propel defending champion University Prep back into the City League title game with a 52-14 win over Brashear in a semifinal at Cupples Stadium.
The Fumbler: With the Steelers playing in Paris, I've got french fries on my mind
You might have heard the Steelers play in Paris this weekend. That has The Fumbler thinking a lot about french fries. Classic, curly, waffle, shoestring, steak, crinkle cut ... he loves them all. Hey, what do french fries do when they meet after a long time? They ketchup. That’s just what best spuds do, right? The Fumbler is no small potato when it comes to top prognosticators. Not only has he been successful and won many awards, but it’s been a blast writing this column for so many years.
Freshmen lead Peters Township girls to PIAA golf team title
Synclaire Stroyne works as a physician's assistant in labor and delivery at Jefferson Hospital. Stroyne was given the day off Wednesday to coach her Peters Township team in the PIAA Class 3A girls golf championship at Penn State. And, wouldn't you know, the Indians delivered their coach a state title and the school's third in four years.
Shady Side Academy and North Catholic capture WPIAL girls team tennis titles
On a cool but sunny Wednesday afternoon, Meriwether McCargo and her Shady Side Academy teammates were in a merry mood. That's what happens when you win a second consecutive WPIAL girls team tennis title. After going 15 years between championships, No. 1 Shady Side Academy went back to back - and earned the school's seventh title overall - by defeating No. 2 Bethel Park, 4-1, in the Class 3A final at Washington & Jefferson's Janet Swanson Tennis Center.

Prep Talk: Should the WPIAL move its football championships to the Riverhounds’ renovated stadium?
Artist’s renditions of Riverhounds SC’s soon-to-be renovated stadium make the place look beautiful for pro soccer in a few years, with anywhere between 12,000-15,000 seats and a splendid view of the city. But that pretty picture brings about a question concerning another sport. Would the Riverhounds’ new F.N.B. Stadium be a perfect setting for some — or all — of the WPIAL football championships in the future?
Inspired by its history, unbeaten Beth-Center has its hopes set on a championship run
One day, during preseason camp, the Beth-Center football team got together to watch some film. But this wasn’t tape from a practice or scrimmage. It was a YouTube video of a game played 40 years ago, one that saw Beth-Center beat Ellwood City to secure a berth in the WPIAL Class 2A championship. The Bulldogs haven’t been back since. “They sat up and watched the game,” said Beth-Center coach Tim Trump, a two-way lineman on that 1986 team.

West Allegheny's Nico Ward shoots tournament-record 63 to win PIAA Class 3A golf title
Playing in a loaded field that included the two-time defending champion, West Allegheny's Nico Ward knew he would have to be on top of his game to win the PIAA Class 3A golf championship. Ward did exactly that, and in doing so produced the best round - and one of the top performances - in tournament history. Ward fired a 9-under-par 63 at Penn State's White Course on Tuesday to finish with a two-day total of 14-under 130 and claim his first title.

High school football notes: North Catholic's Will Waskiewicz is one of the WPIAL's top receivers and returners
Where there's a Will, there's a way. And when Will Waskiewicz gets the ball in his hands, he normally finds a way to make a big play for a North Catholic team that has eyes on making a long run in the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs. Waskiewicz is a 5-foot-8, 165-pound senior who has been putting up impressive numbers as a wide receiver, cornerback and return man. Through eight games, Waskiewicz, one of the WPIAL's most productive pass catchers for three seasons, has 38 receptions for 691 yards.

Post-Gazette football rankings: A big week ahead for the WPIAL Class 5A title contenders
Little has changed in the WPIAL rankings. But, come next week, that could be a much different story - at least in Class 5A. Week 9 features a trio of key showdowns in Class 5A, each of which will go a long way in determining the three conference champions.

Carson Kittsley looks to do something no WPIAL golfer — not even Arnold Palmer — has ever done
Getting the Kittsley family together on the golf course is rather difficult these days, but there is one time of year when they all play together. That’s the family “Turkey Shoot,” when Brad Kittsley and his four sons — Davis, Carson, Ellis and Fred — go to the family course, Oakmont Country Club, over Thanksgiving break to play nine holes. Only there is a slight twist. “Whoever shoots the lowest, with three golf clubs, wins the Turkey Trophy,” Davis said. That’s right, three clubs.
Extra Points: Although untested, reigning WPIAL Class 2A champ Seton LaSalle looks even better this year
Halloween is still two weeks away, but Seton LaSalle coach Tim Storino said something Saturday that was pretty scary, at least for the other teams in WPIAL Class 2A. "We're significantly better than last season. It's not even close," said Storino, who is in his fifth season. "We'd beat last year's team by three scores." The Rebels won a WPIAL title and reached the PIAA semifinals a season ago, so if Storino is right, the rest of the classification better watch out.

WPIAL Class 3A, 2A, 1A roundup: Avonworth defense shines in victory against West Mifflin
Two-time defending WPIAL Class 3A champ Avonworth gave up 34 points in a season-opening loss. Since then, Avonworth’s defense has been nothing but stout. Since that opening loss to Hopewell, no team has scored more than two touchdowns against Avonworth, and the Antelopes turned in another strong defensive effort Friday in a 33-6 victory against West Mifflin in a WPIAL Three Rivers Conference game.
North Hills pours it on Plum, uses terrific defensive performance to claim huge conference win
When it rains, it pours. And on a rainy Friday night at Martorelli Stadium, North Hills poured it on Plum in a big way. North Hills took advantage of Plum miscues and short fields in the first half and coasted to a surprising 42-7 mercy rule win in a key Class 5A Northeast Conference game. With the victory, North Hills (6-1, 3-0) closed in on a playoff berth and remained tied atop the conference with Pine-Richland, the No. 1-ranked team in the WPIAL and state.

The top 5 games to watch in WPIAL and City League football in Week 8 Original
Here are some top games on tap for district high school football in Week 8: Game of the week Plum at North Hills, 7 p.m. Friday: Want to see an exciting finish? Go watch Plum. Plum games haven’t been for the faint of heart. The Mustangs (5-2 overall, 0-2 in the Class 5A Northeast Conference) have had three straight games decided in the final minute of play — a 29-28 win over Kiski Area, a 38-35 loss to Armstrong and a 35-28 loss to Moon.
Fort Cherry uses physical play to hammer Jeannette in a Class 1A showdown
Fort Cherry coach Tanner Garry said his team was able to quickly rebound mentally from its first and only loss a month ago. As for physically, well, the Rangers showed Thursday they are all good in that department, too. No. 5 Fort Cherry used its physicality to dominate the line of scrimmage — and all other phases — on its way to a 42-3 mercy-rule win at No. 3 Jeannette in a non-conference game between Class 1A powers.
High school highlights: Deer Lakes clinches its section with a tight win over Freeport
Artemey Parshyn scored on a penalty kick with 12 minutes remaining to give Deer Lakes the deciding goal in a 3-2 victory against host Freeport in a Class 2A Section 1 game Thursday. The victory clinched the section title for the Lancers, who improved to 11-0 in the section and 12-2-2 overall. Freeport falls to 9-2 in the section and 11-3-2 overall. "The kids are super excited to clinch the section title," Deer Lakes coach Devin Murray said.
The son of a coach, Nick Keefer has red-hot Hempfield believing big things are ahead
Nick Keefer has been around high school football since he was a child. Keefer, in his fourth year as Hempfield's head coach, said some of his earliest memories are as a ball boy wheeling Gatorade onto the field at Cupples Stadium. His dad, Tim, was the head coach at old Oliver High School. He also remembers keeping the scorebook in fourth grade when his dad's Oliver team fell to Peabody in the City League championship. "I take my kids to Disney.

Jerry Matulevic, one of the winningest baseball coaches in WPIAL history, dies at 87
Jerry Matulevic and his wife, Nancy, never had children of their own. But in a way, Matulevic was like another dad to many teenagers throughout his three-plus decades as Shaler’s baseball coach. Matulevic had a way about him that made him a unique, legendary coach. First, he is one of the winningest coaches in WPIAL history and had three district championships and a state title on his resume before he retired in 2022.
The Fumbler: I’m looking for answers from these WPIAL coaches down the stretch
Every WPIAL and City League team had question marks entering the season. The Fumbler now has questions for some of the coaches as we enter the stretch run of the regular season. Is Tim Trump trying to make Beth-Center great again? The Bulldogs are 7-0 for the first time since 2014 — not bad for a team that went just 1-8 two seasons ago. What is Duke Johncour’s favorite college?
High school football notes: A new offense has Shenango on the verge of its best start in two decades
Go to a Shenango game, and it could be a while before you see the Wildcats throw the ball. "We went a few games where we didn't complete any passes," coach Casey Hilton said. No passes, no problem. Under Hilton, the team's first-year coach, Shenango is using the wing-T to run to W's. The unbeaten Wildcats are just one win away from their best start in more than two decades. Shenango, which didn't win more than four games in any of the previous five seasons, is 6-0 for the first time since 2020.
Prep Talk: Ranking the top 10 wide receivers in the WPIAL this century
One in an occasional series on top players, teams, athletes and games in WPIAL-City League sports since 2000. Scouting services rank Pine-Richland’s Khalil Taylor among the top 20 senior receivers in the country. And that brings up an interesting question. How does Taylor stack up with the top receivers in the WPIAL or City League since 2000?

Undefeated Ligonier Valley is authoring one of the WPIAL’s best turnaround stories
Ligonier Valley was keenly aware of what people were saying about the team prior to the season. “A lot of the preseason stuff was outstanding motivation. We didn’t have to motivate them more than just taking the clippings and putting them up on the board,” Rams coach Roger Beitel said. “[It was] everything from being ... predicted to be the worst team in [Class] 2A and that the ceiling might be three wins.” Ligonier Valley left three wins in its wake about a month ago.
High school girls soccer highlights: Mars gives Shaler its first section loss
Shaler’s perfect Class 3A Section 1 streak has come to a close. Mars (11-1-1, 7-1-1) earned a dominant 5-1 victory over the Titans (11-2-0, 8-1-0), who still hold the top spot in the section. The Planets got off to a hot start, recording four of the five goals in the first half. HB Wolski and Miley Gratton each netted a brace, while Jade Breese scored once. Carly McKenna led the offense with two assists, while Mackenzie Powell and Katie Blake added one each.
