I recently rewatched Robert Eggers' debut film, “The Witch,” and it’s legitimately impressive this guy gets to keep making the movies he wants to make. A supernatural folk tale set in 1630s New England with period-accurate dialogue didn’t scream “breakout hit,” but thanks to the director’s firm vision and a lead performance by a young Anya Taylor-Joy, he was given a long leash for future projects.

I spent last week plugging the kind of movie of which I want to see more: the utterly delightful and fantastic “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” I want more movies like this, and the way to get more movies like this is for people to go see it. So, this week I will instead implore you to not go see a movie that’s kind of the epitome of movies of which we need fewer.

I’ve been a professional film critic for a long time now. One thing I think I understand better than a lot of critics? This gig is subjective as hell. What I like? You might not. What you like? I might not. It’s all cool. I don’t know you, but I know me, and I try to keep that in mind at all times when I’m writing about movies. That also gives me pause sometimes in recommending a movie too strongly. What if I say a movie is great and you hate it? Will you hate me? Will you never trust my opinion again?
