Whenever I go to a city, I always want to visit its encyclopedic museum. It’s a way to take the temperature of an art scene, to see what a community (and maybe more accurately the museum’s living and dead patrons) values, and a way to gauge where a specific town, and by extension its people and artists, fits into larger artistic conversations happening in Texas, nationally, and internationally. I think areas that don’t have encyclopedic institutions are worse off for it.

In his public lectures, art critic Jerry Saltz has an adage: for an artist to succeed, all they need is the support of one dealer, two critics, two curators, and four to five collectors. Got them — only 10 people total — and your art career can (can, not will) go off like gangbusters. While pithy and memorable, the sentiment of the claim is that an artist can’t make their way alone — they’re part of a larger web of people, who are all symbiotically related to one another’s successes.

For February, the second month of Glasstire’s anniversary celebration, we are looking at the art, artists, galleries, spaces, and institutions we’ve watched grow up and thrive in Texas and beyond over the past 25 years. The fact that our publication started in 2001 means that since our founding, artists have progressed through a full generation of their careers — artists who were emerging when we came on the scene are now solidly midcareer.
