Democrats keep asking trans people for money. We’re asking for a backbone
In recent campaign ads, Ohio Democratic Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur said, "I voted with Republicans to keep transgender ideology out of our schools" and "boys should not play in girls' sports." In two sentences, she offered a solution to an illusory problem and denied the identities of transgender girls. It was surrender. Republicans need trans people as an enemy, having already spent more than $60 million on anti-trans ads in 2026.

Column: Trump’s shipbuilding order creates ‘significant challenges’
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... When I arrived for my first Pentagon assignment in 2015, a piece of paper was pinned to my cubicle wall: the “Defense Acquisition System Pentagon Language Translation Guide.” It was the cynical humor that spreads because it’s true — even among people dedicated to doing the best job they can.
Patriotism means criticizing America and making it better Original
There is a protest sign in the back of my car. It has been to courthouse squares, to highway overpasses, to small towns. It’s too long to be a truly great protest sign, but I take it everywhere. It carries one sentence, from James Baldwin: "I love America more than any other country in the world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually." I made the sign because Baldwin put into one sentence what I’ve spent a career trying to live.
Bulwark on Sunday: The Persecution of Bree Fram
Bree Fram joins Bill Kristol to discuss the escalating attacks on transgender Americans—from the removal of federal health care benefits to subpoenas for hospital records and even reports of the Department of Justice searching VA files for evidence of transition. What does this mean for trans service members and for the broader assault on trans lives? There will, however, be a meeting of Persuasion readers in New York this coming Thursday, August 21.
Ideological purges reduce deterrence, readiness, and effectiveness. Just ask Stalin
Insights & Reports History is replete with cautionary tales about the dangers of ideological purges, particularly when they target national-security institutions. One of the starkest examples comes from the Soviet Union, when Joseph Stalin’s purges gutted the Red Army on the eve of World War II. Now the United States faces a potentially parallel crisis: the purge of transgender service members from the military amid rising tensions with China and Russia.
A modern Bastogne comparison and a call for a courageous stand
Echoes of History: The Siege of Bastogne On December 20th, 1944, in the middle of what became known as the Battle of the Bulge, German forces surrounded the Americans, including the 101st Airborne Division, in the town of Bastogne. Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe, the artillery commander attached to the 101st, was the senior American officer inside the siege. His boss, Major General Taylor, had been called away to a conference, so McAuliffe assumed command.

When I walk into a room, the first thing people notice isn't that I'm transgender. They see the eagle on my chest, the uniform I wear and the responsibility it conveys. The conversation isn't about my identity - it's about accomplishing the mission. My identity, while integral to who I am, is not the banner under which I serve - that's the flag of the United States riding on my shoulder.
Banning gender affirming care impacts service members and families

With Honor and Integrity
Description Praise Heartfelt personal accounts from transgender people fighting for the right to serve in the military “Prior to coming out as transgender I served the first several years of my career under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” hiding my sexual orientation out of the constant fear of expulsion. I then found myself in the same predicament as when I first joined, wanting nothing more than to serve my country and do my job, but at the cost of sacrificing a major part of who I am. . . .
