Construction Companies Must Accommodate Cyclists When Working In Bike Lanes — FK Law Illinois
I have been biking around Chicago for more than two decades now. I ride from my home in Logan Square to my office in the Loop daily. Frequently, I find that construction crews doing work in designated bicycle facilities fail to accommodate bike traffic while work is taking place. A glaring example of this occurred this morning in the Dearborn Bicycle Lane in the Loop. This morning at around 8:45 a.m. I was biking south in the Dearborn Bike Lane.
Illinois Bike Laws | Bike Law
ILLINOIS BICYCLE LAWS It’s important to know your legal rights (and duties) when bicycling in Illinois. It is especially important after a bicycle accident (we call them bicycle “crashes” and explain why here). For any questions about the State’s bike laws, or about your rights to the road, contact attorneys Jim Freeman and Brendan Kevenides directly. Right to the Road Illinois bicyclists generally have the same rights, and same duties, as drivers of motor vehicles.
Surly Long Haul Trucker--Advice
Hi, I am thinking about buying a used LHT that I would not be able to see or try before buying it. It seems to be a decent deal but I have some questions. I've heard for years that they are great bikes but have not ridden one myself. I am looking for a good quality road bike that will be comfortable for distance touring. So if you ride a Surly Long Haul Trucker, could you please mention what you like about it? Do you find it heavy? And if you ride the 52cm size, how tall are you? Tags: ▶ Reply to This

Colombia's Visionary Bicycle Legislation
How does Colombia, one of the most notoriously happiest countries in the world, intend to make its 49 million residents even happier? It passes landmark legislation designed to make bicycling its country’s primary means of transportation. Yes, that is right, Colombia does not just want to make bicycling an acceptable form of transportation, but it wants to make bicycling the country’s primary source of transportation.
Bicycle Doorings Are a Problem That Just Won't Go Away | Bike Law
The urban bicyclist rides in perpetual fear of having a door flung open into their path. Sadly, the number of such incidents is going in the wrong direction. Between 2014 and 2015 the number of reported doorings in Chicago rose by 50 percent. In Chicago, more than 300 bicyclists were doored in 2015, the last year for which figures are available. This grim figure is consistent with our firm’s experiences. Dooring cases are by far the most common type of bike crash cases in which we get involved.
What to Do If You Are in a Bicycle Accident (no, Crash!) | Bike Law
Bike Law network lawyers, Bruce Hagen (GA) and Bob Mionske (OR) discuss one of the most FAQ we receive – “What to do if I’m in a bike accident?” We have written extensively on the topic of what to do after a bicycle crash and at our recent Bike Law retreat, we put together an information-rich video on our tips for what to do after you’ve been in a bike crash and why we call it a crash, not an accident.
Cyclist Obstructing Traffic? Nope — Roll the Videotape! | Bike Law
When a Michigan bicyclist got a ticket in 2015 for impeding traffic, he could have simply paid a $200 fine. But he believed the trooper who pulled him over was wrong about the law and hostile to bicyclists’ rights to use Michigan roads. So, he decided to fight. It took two trips to the courthouse, but the bicyclist prevailed with help from Michigan attorney, Bryan Waldman, a member of the Bike Law network. The trooper’s own dash cam video proved crucial to the cyclist’s defense.
City of Chicago fails in attempt to have bike lanes declared recreational areas
In a hearing last week in the Circuit Court of Cook County the City of Chicago sought to have all of the bicycle lanes installed throughout the City declared “recreational facilities.” The effect of this creative legal maneuver would have been to immunize the municipality for injuries to bicyclists caused by the City’s failure to keep its bike lanes safe for riders.
A case for Chicago's red light cameras
Red light cameras are present at 174 of Chicago's intersections. When a driver runs a red light, the camera snaps a photo of the offending vehicle and its license plate. A traffic ticket is then mailed to the driver. The city touts the cameras as a means for keeping Chicago's streets safer by encouraging drivers to resist the urge to run lights. Others feel that the whole project is little more than a money grab by Mayor Rahm Emanuel's administration.
In Upholding $1.9 Million Verdict, IL Appeals Court Protects Bicyclists From City's Shoddy Roadwork
Yesterday, the Illinois Appellate Court upheld a $1.9 million jury verdict to a bicyclist injured due to shoddy roadwork performed by the City of Chicago. With the decision the Court provided some important clarification regarding how a jury should be instructed in cases arising from injuries caused by an activity performed negligently by a local municipality. The case, Smart v. The City of Chicago, 2013 IL App (1st) 120901, arose from an incident that occurred on July 1, 2007.
A Cool and Logical Analysis Of The Motorist Menace
Bicycles are not dangerous. A gentle push of a pedal and a bit of coordination is all that is required to glide serenely forward. Learning to ride one of these simple devices is among the first advanced physical endeavors we humans attempt. Bicycling becomes more complicated, challenging, after we leave the safety of our parents' driveways and the untrafficked peace of the sidewalk. When the bicyclist ventures onto the road -- as he or she must -- cycling becomes a little scary.
