1 Beyond the ‘Doctor’ Title Not all doctoral education is or should be treated as if it is the same. While all doctoral-level programmes must meet accredited doctoral outcomes as stipulated by regulatory bodies, it is not the case that each type of doctoral programme targets the same outcomes. The primary purpose of a doctor of philosophy (PhD) is to make a substantial and original contribution to knowledge within a specific academic discipline.
