The New Brownies' Book: Karida L. Brown and Charly Palmer's 2024 BGHB Special Citation Speech
CHARLY PALMER: We want to start by thanking the committee for this incredible honor. We are truly surprised, humbled, and so grateful to be standing here today, receiving this special citation. It’s a rare acknowledgment — given only seven times in the entire history of the Boston Globe–Horn Book Awards — and we don’t take that lightly. It means so much to us, but more importantly, it means so much to the work that we’ve done with The New Brownies’ Book.
Kin: Carole Boston Weatherford's 2024 BGHB Poetry Award Speech
I’d like to thank the Boston Globe–Horn Book Awards Committee for this honor. Thanks also to Reka Simonsen, my editor at Simon & Schuster, for your faith in bringing this project to life. Last but not least, I am indebted to my agent, Rubin Pfeffer, for planting the seed for a mother-son collaboration when he inquired about a Black town that might inspire a poetry collection similar to Edgar Lee Masters’s Spoon River Anthology.
Kin: Jeffery Boston Weatherford's 2024 BGHB Poetry Award Speech
First and foremost, I would of course like to thank the Boston Globe–Horn Book Awards Committee for this honor, the entire creative team at Simon & Schuster, and our agent, Rubin Pfeffer, for catalyzing this project in the first place. Rubin, you have been a light in this journey, always pushing me to put my best foot forward, no matter what, and for that I am forever grateful. Without your suggestion, Kin would never have come to be. This is your award as much as it is ours.

I’d like to thank the Boston Globe–Horn Book Awards Committee for recognizing The Mona Lisa Vanishes; it is truly an honor. I’d also like to thank editor Annie Kelley, Katrina Damkoehler, and everyone at Random House Studio for trusting me to work on this book. Most of all, I want to thank Nicholas Day for writing this amazing book and for letting me contribute to it.

Lemony Snicket popped by to revel in Kansas City’s Explor-a-Storium
A No, David! installation at The Rabbit hOle. // Photo by Travis Young Daniel Handler is an author best known for A Series of Unfortunate Events, a 13-book children’s saga published under the name of its macabre narrator, Lemony Snicket. When Handler began his journey with the series, literary professionals raised their hackles at the grotesquerie that makes the books so whimsical and singular.
The Scariest Books for Kids
recommended by Jack Meggitt-Phillips The Beast and the Bethany Jack Meggitt-Phillips & Isabelle Follath (illustrator) Scary children's books give kids the pleasure of immersing themselves in an exciting page-turner, and are an excellent way to get reluctant readers to read novels. As long as you pay attention to individual children's sensibilities, it shouldn't be hard to find books that give them thrills rather than nightmares.

Lee Littlewood: Girls Can Do It All
Seems like a good time to remind girls they can do everything boys can and are stronger than they may know. These new books introduce tough girls and women, and even a feminist baby. Chris Evert was the best tennis player in the United States as a teen, and Martina Navratilova was the national champ in communist Czechoslovakia at age 15. The pair became fast friends on the world tennis circuit, though they knew they were supposed to hate each other, like their countries did in the 1970s.
THE DOLL PEOPLE'S CHRISTMAS
The beloved Doll People series of novels for middle graders extends to a younger audience with this Christmas story. The Doll family of eight tiny, old-fashioned dolls belongs to a girl named Kate, who has custody of the family-heirloom dolls and their furnished Victorian dollhouse. Her younger sister, Nora, has her own modern, plastic dollhouse with a family of five plastic dolls, the Funcrafts.
THE MONSTER WAR by Alan Gratz , Brett Helquist | Kirkus Reviews
Seven young heroes, together at last and diverse in many ways, tackle armies of monsters as well as a cycle of warfare that has turned for thousands of years. “League of Seven—full steam ahead!” In this headlong climax, Gratz adds the final two members to his intrepid band of world savers: tattooed, gray-skinned “science-pirate” Martine, whose synesthetic perceptions come in handy more than once; and Gonzalo, a blind young Texas Ranger with a talkative, intelligent raygun dubbed Señor X.
