Middle East Conflict Raises Risks to Undersea Fiber Optic Cables and Digital Connectivity
Key Judgments Maritime insecurity in the Red Sea and Strait of Hormuz is increasing the likelihood that routine cable faults will be harder to repair and more disruptive across interregional data routes. The most likely near-term impact of the conflict is delayed maintenance, slower repair access, and heavier traffic rerouting rather than immediate region-wide communications failure.
Public-Private Partnerships at Scale: Coordinating with Authorities at Global Sporting Events
Major international sporting events place extraordinary demands on both public and private stakeholders. When an event spans multiple countries, dozens of host cities, and several layers of government authority, traditional security and risk models are no longer sufficient.
Notable Insider Trading Decision Remanded by Supreme Court in Light of Bridgegate Ruling | JD Supra
On December 30, 2019, the Second Circuit issued a ruling in U.S. v. Blaszczak, 947 F.3d 19 (2d Cir. 2019). In Blaszczak, a former Medicare official gave tips to analysts on changes to government reimbursement rates that he received from former government colleagues. The Second Circuit held that the government had a proprietary right to keep the rates confidential and, thus, this non-public information could be considered “property” under the Title 18 securities and wire fraud statutes.

Borrower Beware: Potential Pitfalls and Government Oversight of PPP Loan Certifications | JD Supra

Interlocutory Appeals In MDLs Would Burden Litigants, Courts
Law360 (April 24, 2020, 6:01 PM EDT) -- A group of pharmaceutical and medical device companies have suggested amending the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure to give them a special right to appeal interlocutory orders in multidistrict litigation cases. The proposed rule, as laid out in an April 10 Law360 guest article, would vastly diminish the long-protected right of MDL judges to manage their dockets, and burden the courts of appeal with unnecessary appeals.

Underpaying Blue-Collar Workers Hurts Long-Term Profits, Research Shows
A growing body of research sheds light on how the downward pressure on blue-collar wages is bad for the overall U.S. economy. While supply-chain employers have enjoyed a rebirth and reinvention of the sector, it comes with increasing competition to manufacture and deliver goods faster and cheaper. This fierce global competition on everything from a dishwasher to a drone is driving companies to compress their profit margins. And one of the largest components of production is labor.

Mets' Offensive Struggles Continue in San Diego
It was another hard luck loss for Jacob deGrom last night. Even though the Mets’ ace allowed just two runs in seven innings against the Padres, his effort wasn’t enough as the Mets’ offense was blanked 4-0 by San Diego’s rookie sensation, Chris Paddack. DeGrom matched zeros with Paddack until he surrendered a home run to Hunter Renfroe in the fifth inning. The only other run the reigning Cy Young Award Winner would yield would be on a sacrifice fly by Ty France in the seventh inning.
SEMA Brings Out the Best; This 1955 210 Wagon Is No Exception
Building a display car for the yearly Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show is a massive undertaking for everyone involved. The show offers exhibiting companies the opportunity to show off their wares to a captive audience, but there’s a caveat to that opportunity. With well over 1,500 of the sickest rides around on display throughout the Las Vegas Convention Center, a vehicle really needs to stand out to avoid dropping under the radar. Enter The Shaggin’ Wagon.

Infographic: Is There a 'Right' Glass for My Beer?
October 19, 2017 Is there really such a thing as the right beer glass? It’s a puzzle that might intimidate newer beer lovers, but ask any beer expert, and they’ll overwhelmingly answer “Yes.” There are a few ways choosing the right beer glass enhances your experience. Certain glass shapes can accentuate different parts of your beer, like the nose (a.k.a. how a beer smells). If you’re drinking a higher-alcohol beer, you’ll likely receive a smaller glass than if you were drinking a sessionable beer.

Drinking Games: Have Social Media and Apps like Untapped Changed the Way We Consume Beer?
When Tim Mather and Greg Avola created the social networking platform for beer drinkers known as Untappd in 2010, they had no idea how big of an influence it would have on the industry. “At the time of Untappd’s inception, my partner Greg and I were both discovering the world of craft beer as well as trying to come up with a fun new project,” explains Mather, a user experience designer at Disney.
Mets Have Not The Closed Door On Cespedes Yet
Kristie Ackert of the NY Daily News reports that the Mets don’t see Yoenis Cespedes as a fit unless he lowers his demands. Cespedes is seeking a 6 year deal worth around $120 million, but the Mets are unwilling to commit to him for that many years. Since he’s already 30 years old, they fear that his contract would become a burden on the team’s payroll in the future. However, Ackert says that the door is not completely shut on Cespedes just yet.
Alderson Praises Fans For Their Passion, Proud Of Homegrown Stars
With the Mets headed to the World Series, Sandy Alderson couldn’t be more grateful for the team’s passionate fan base. They supported the team through many difficult seasons, and they have been waiting for years to finally see a winner. “New York has been patient with us, and loyal,” he said after the game. “Our goal was to play good baseball through the entire regular season. We took some detours along the way.
Risk and Outrage on the Animas River
Outrage is directly correlated with what is visible and easy to understand, not what is actually outrageous. Case in point: the EPA accidentally released 1 million gallons of mine waste into the Animas River (while investigating how to stop mine drainage, no less), turning the river sludgy and bright orange. The response: HEADS MUST ROLL! Of course, mines developed by thousands of private individuals and companies have been slowly, invisibly poisoning the Animas for more than a century.

Betting on Craft Beer: Casinos Tapping Into Craft Beer
Joe Pickett looked across the table at a trio of Las Vegas businessmen: the owner, the CEO and a lawyer for Ellis Island Casino. “What do you know about running a brewery?” one of the men asked. Having worked in around breweries since he was fourteen, Pickett had no doubts about about his own knowledge of making beer. But the three suits seemed out of their element. “The real question is, what do you know about running a brewery?” Pickett replied.
Collins Says He Will Continue to Use Alex Torres In Big Spots
Despite another wild outing by Alex Torres, Terry Collins doesn’t seem to be losing faith in the Mets enigmatic lefty. Collins says that he will continue to use Torres in high pressure situations. “That’s what he’s here to do,” Collins said. (Mike Vorkunov) Torres allowed a run and walked three batters during last night’s appearance. However, he prevented further damaged by striking out Jorge Soler with the bases loaded. Collins defended his decision to allow Torres to finish the 6th inning.
How We Talk About the California Drought
I’m a TA for a class on environment and the media this semester, and I’ve been thinking a lot about our discourse around water issues and how it affects people’s perceptions of complex problems. Nowhere have I seen the simplification and outrage that is prevalent in our treatment of environmental issues more than with the coverage of California’s drought.

5 Canned Beer and Hiking Destinations

How to Make Business Cards from Beer Boxes
Beer fans tend to drink a lot of different beers, and after a while they end up with a colorful stack of beer boxes and six-pack carriers. It’s too bad that these functional pieces of artwork and illustrations are destined for the landfill or at best the recycling facility. An alternative to dumping them is to reuse the cardboard for other purposes. Here’s how to turn your recycling bin into a pile of unique up-cycled business cards.
