How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I appreciate receiving well-crafted pitches that are concise, relevant, and engaging. Here are some key points on how I prefer to be pitched on stories:Personalized approach: Begin the pitch by addressing me by my name and demonstrate that you have done some research on the topics or beats I cover. Generic mass emails are less likely to catch my attention.Clear and concise subject line: Your subject line should accurately reflect the content of your pitch and be attention-grabbing. A concise and specific subject line helps me quickly understand the nature of the story you're pitching.Introduction and context: In the opening paragraph, provide a brief introduction about yourself, your company or client, and the purpose of the pitch. Include a concise summary of the story idea or angle you are proposing.Relevance and exclusivity: Show how your story is relevant to my audience and why it stands out. If you have an exclusive or unique angle, mention it to pique my interest. Exclusive stories can be particularly appealing, as they offer readers something new and compelling.Supporting details: Provide supporting details, such as statistics, expert quotes, or examples, to strengthen your pitch. These help me gauge the potential value and credibility of the story.Writing style: Use clear and concise language, avoiding jargon or technical terms that may be difficult for a general audience to understand. Write in a way that reflects the tone and style of the publication I work for.Visual elements: If your story has potential for visual appeal, such as high-quality images, infographics, or videos, mention them in the pitch. Visual elements can enhance the overall appeal and engagement of a story.Respectful follow-up: If I don't respond immediately, it's okay to send a polite follow-up email after a reasonable amount of time.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

I've received countless pitches over the years, but there was one that truly stood out as the worst of the worst. It was an email that landed in my inbox with the subject line: "Breaking News: World's First Talking Houseplant!"Intrigued by the bold claim, I opened the email expecting to find a well-crafted press release about a revolutionary scientific breakthrough or perhaps a quirky invention. However, what I discovered was far from that. The pitch was written in a garish font, filled with grammatical errors, and lacked any coherent structure. The sender, who identified themselves as an eccentric inventor named Professor Botanica, claimed to have developed a houseplant that could hold intelligent conversations with its owners. According to the pitch, this extraordinary plant named "Chatty Charlie" possessed a sophisticated neural network embedded within its leaves, allowing it to comprehend human speech and respond accordingly. As I delved further into the email, it became apparent that the entire pitch was a mix of delusion, pseudoscience, and wishful thinking. The sender even went as far as sharing a Photoshopped image of a potted plant with a small microphone attached to one of its leaves. Not only did the pitch lack credibility, but it also failed to address any of the fundamental questions that would naturally arise from such a groundbreaking claim. There was no mention of scientific research, data, or even a demonstration of the talking plant in action. It seemed like a desperate attempt to grab attention without any substance behind it.Regrettably, I had to decline the opportunity to cover this supposed world's first talking houseplant. While I appreciate creativity and innovation, it is essential to maintain a level of journalistic integrity and ensure that the stories we cover are backed by evidence and credibility. So, without a doubt, the worst pitch I ever received was the one about the talking houseplant. It left me questioning the sanity of some of the pitches that end up in my inbox and reinforced the need for critical evaluation when considering potential stories.

This misperception stems from a lack of understanding about the freelance journalism industry and the diverse range of professionals within it
