1 Introduction Motherhood has long been understood as a transformative experience, yet existing frameworks have struggled to capture the full complexity of this transition for Black women. The term matrescence, first coined by Raphael (1975) and later expanded by Athan (2020, 2024), describes the developmental transition to motherhood as a process akin to adolescence, involving biological, psychological, and social change.

When Black Girls Go Missing, Why Does the World Look Away?

Black children account for about 37 percent of missing cases but receive far less media coverage. Adultification bias causes Black girls to be perceived as older and less innocent. Psychological research shows empathy is often stronger for perceived in-group members. Every year in the United States, hundreds of thousands of children are reported missing. Some cases ignite national alarm, dominating television coverage and social media feeds.
