Elon Musk’s trillion: built on the blood of Texas
Behind the mask of futuristic “innovation,” Musk’s wealth is built on destroyed communities, stolen wages, unearned tax breaks, and polluted waters. His companies wreck Texas and everyday people pay the price. Musk’s trillion-dollar wealth is greater than the total GDP of the world’s 92 poorest countries combined. He has chosen Texas as his base of operations and personal playground for one reason only: because the state and local governments are willing to roll over for his companies.

Robert Roberson “shaken baby syndrome” case reveals grave injustices for autistic people
On November 25, Deborah Oakes Evans, the judge who previously signed a death warrant for Robert Roberson, stepped down from the case. This is the latest twist in a series of legal wranglings around Roberson’s fate. Roberson has maintained his innocence in the death of his 2-year-old daughter for over 22 years. He was convicted of murder based on a highly disputed “shaken baby syndrome” diagnosis, which even some who testified to his guilt now doubt.
Texas GA-46 threatens immigrants’ right to healthcare Original
On Nov. 1, Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s executive order GA-46 went into effect. This order does not bar healthcare for undocumented people but it is designed to intimidate them out of seeking healthcare when they need it through threats of reporting. Is this a sincere effort by Abbott to protect the state’s healthcare system, or is this another racist political stunt to demonize and attack the most vulnerable? What is GA-46?
Texas pregnancy deaths up 56% since abortion ban
Two years after the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and three years since the implementation of Texas’s SB 8 “bounty” bill in 2021, the facts on the ground are showing exactly what activists expected: a massive increase in deaths of both mothers and infants.
Vigil honors the life of Diamond Brigman, Black trans woman murdered in Houston
On the afternoon of March 24, dozens of friends and community members gathered in a courtyard in Houston’s museum district to remember and honor the life of Diamond Brigman. Brigman, a 36-year-old Black transgender woman, was murdered in southwest Houston earlier in the month. The vigil was organized by several organizations dedicated to improving the lives of trans people, the founders of which knew her personally.
Eagle Pass stand-off: what’s really behind the border dispute?
US Border Patrol has been engaged in a stand-off with the Texas Department of Public Safety and National Guard over control of Shelby Park, a small park in the usually quiet town of Eagle Pass. Right-wing media is portraying this as a heroic stand by cops and state forces under the control of Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Eagle Pass stand-off: what’s really behind the border dispute?
U.S. Border Patrol has been engaged in a stand-off with the Texas Department of Public Safety and National Guard over control of Shelby Park, a small park in the usually quiet town of Eagle Pass. Right-wing media is portraying this as a heroic stand by cops and state forces under the control of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. The Biden administration is claiming to have a more humanitarian border policy, even as they incarcerate and deport record numbers of immigrants.
Biden rushes border wall, bringing border policy in lockstep with Trump, Abbott
In a stark reversal of one of his most significant campaign promises, President Biden has waived 26 federal environmental, public health and cultural protection laws in order to fast-track construction of former President Donald Trump’s border wall. Just months ago, the Biden administration was railing against Greg Abbott’s destructive use of nets and floating razor wire along the border.
Across Texas, communities fight to defend public education
The Texas legislature has been preparing an all-out assault on public education, pushing a school voucher scam which would on a massive scale take away public funds from public schools and put the money into unaccountable, private, for-profit hands in the name of so-called “choice.” Many schools across the state are feeling the repercussions of the state defunding of schools, the drying up of COVID assistance in conjunction with lower enrollment.
Texas man sues ex-wife’s friends for helping her to obtain an abortion
A Texas man, Marcus Silva, is suing three of his ex-wife’s friends for $1 million each, claiming that by helping her obtain an abortion medication, they engaged in a wrongful death conspiracy. Silva is being represented by Jonathan Mitchell, one of the architects of the SB 8 anti-abortion “bounty hunter” bill.
Temple, Texas, cop who killed Michael Dean put on trial
On Jan. 23, the trial of Carmen DeCruz for the killing of Michael Dean finally began. The trial was delayed multiple times from its original date in June 2021. DeCruz had stopped Dean for an alleged traffic violation on December 2, 2019. As DeCruz was taking Dean’s keys with his gun drawn, the gun fired directly into Dean’s head. DeCruz is being charged with manslaughter, but the Dean family still believes he should have been charged with murder.
Texas prepares new anti-abortion bills, but activists are fighting back
Texas has already criminalized abortion several times over, but the far right is continuing its onslaught against abortion access in the 2023 legislative session that began Jan. 10. Now, the state legislature is attacking aspects of bodily autonomy, and remaining protections for reproductive rights, that women and many trans people still enjoy.
Rampant wage theft and safety violations at Musk’s Tesla factory in Austin, Texas
Elon Musk’s Tesla opened a new factory in Austin this year with the promise of thousands of high-paying jobs and economic development. Just seven months into its opening, reports are emerging about the true nature of the construction of the factory, which seemingly includes rampant wage theft and completely falsified safety records.
Racist political opportunism, U.S. empire at the heart of immigrant busing scheme
In racist political stunts, Republican governors Ron DeSantis of Florida, Greg Abbott of Texas, and Doug Ducey of Arizona have bussed over 10,000 migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers north to states run by the Democratic Party. Sending people under false pretenses to Martha’s Vineyard, New York City, Chicago and Washington, D.C., Republican governors are claiming that they will continue this activity until the Biden administration “secures” the border.

Texas attempts legislative assault against oppressed communities, social movements
The current Texas legislative session has been defined by a full-on assault on oppressed communities and social movements. Governor Greg Abbot bragged that in the span of 48 hours, the Texas legislature passed some of the most right-wing and restrictive bills in the country. The legislature has either proposed or passed at least a dozen bills that specifically target the most oppressed and marginalized communities in the state of Texas.
Vaccine apartheid: U.S. puts world at risk for big pharma profits
As COVID vaccine production increases, much of the world faces severe shortages. The governments of the United States, Europe and other rich countries have hoarded vaccines or sold to the highest bidders. A slow rollout in poorer nations will be disastrous for the world’s population and the global economy. It will also diminish the vaccine’s effectiveness as new variants mutate. As of mid-April, 56% of doses have been administered in “high-income” countries with just 16% of the world’s population.

Opinion polls consistently show Arauz with an edge over competitor Guillermo Lasso, an ultra-wealthy, conservative banker.
