What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Calendly is my favorite tool for scheduling. I save lots of time using Otter.ai for transcriptions. My Canon EOS 5D is always riding along.
Why did you become a journalist?
I need an outlet for all the news I get excited about. People only have so much patience for multi-paragraph Facebook messages.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
You can't get rid of me at the office. The best way to get stories is to come early, and be the last to leave.
When's the best time to pitch you?
I prefer that people pitch to me when they are feeling the most engaged and inspired. I don't have a strict routine for checking releases.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Someone explained his job over and over, when I was really asking why he felt he was the best person to embody that job in an engaging story.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
I spend a lot of time outside, gardening or just staring at my favorite plants.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I carry around the New Yorker, trying to make a dent in my ever-growing pile.
