Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
My first real (non-uni, non-intern) job after college was writing for a weekly entertainment/lifestyle newspaper for young adults in Virginia
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Have I ever. I loved writing stories on the typewriter in my mom's or grandma's office as a kid, just like my nieces do now.
How is social media changing news?
Social media is changing how we get our news, how quickly we get our news, and who we trust to get our news from.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Raoul Duke, Hunter S. Thompson's fictional alter-ego
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email. Bonus points for engaging with me on social media, but only after you send all the details via email.
What's your favorite social network?
Instagram is my latest obsession. After all, I need somewhere to post all of the dog selfies, food pics and nature shots I take.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
My small-town school didn't have a newspaper but I did join the yearbook staff. I focused on photography and writing but also did some layout
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I'm most proud of the health care reporting I've done recently, because of the potential impact of covering new treatments and technologies
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
The worst pitch is a self-promotional pitch that bears no relevance to my publication, and proves that the pitcher hasn't done any research.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
In the kitchen creating new recipes with my husband, or more likely, outside in the garden, on a hike, or a walking our dogs.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I've always been a Rolling Stone fan.
