Field survey description. After the inoculations, we moved plants into the field and maintained plants in pots placed into individual holes within a 1.5 x 12 m plot located at Widener Farm in the Duke Forest Teaching and Research Laboratory in Orange Co., North Carolina, USA. This plot was fenced to exclude deer, with an additional mesh barrier to exclude small mammals. Within the plot, there were three rows of 47 holes each and these holes were arranged 0.25 m apart along a 12m length of the plot.
